‘A community effort’: Turlock teens start Kitchens for Change to help tackle food insecurity

in Community

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) — Some Turlock teens have been inspired by World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that responds to national disasters to feed those in need, to tackle food insecurity locally.

Food is cooked, assembled and packaged to-go by Kitchens for Change.

“It’s just been incredible. So many kids are willing and able to come out and help and have fun doing it,” said Elias Rabine, the president and founder of Kitchens for Change.

The high school club is getting hands-on experience, serving their community.

Grayson residents get their hands dirty for next phase of riverside forest restoration

in Environment

A new phase of river restoration launched Saturday with help from people in nearby Grayson.

They planted native trees and brush in an area that will augment work already done at Dos Rios Ranch, just to the northeast.

The nonprofit River Partners hopes that mimicking natural floodplain can aid wildlife while buffering high flows where the Tuolumne and San Joaquin meet.

The new 285-acre project is notable also because it is much closer to a town than any other part of the total 2,400 acres. Grayson is just a few hundred feet away as the crow flies, and someday a trail might provide easy access.

California’s Original Ski Resort Is One of the Sierras’ Best Kept Secrets

in Around California/Entertainment/Fun
Yosemite National Park

When it comes to classic California ski trips, Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain are the big two — but nestled among towering red fir and lodgepole pines above the Yosemite Valley floor, Badger Pass has been a local “in the know” spot for generations. Opened in 1935, it’s one of the oldest ski resorts in the U.S. — and one of only three ski areas serviced by a lift system in a National Park (Hurricane Ridge in Olympic, Washington, and Boston Mills/Brandywine in Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley, being the other two).

Badger is a reassuringly mom-and-pop kind of place. It’s small (there are five lifts, ten runs, and one terrain park) and sits at 7,200 feet elevation, with only natural snow and adult all-day lift tickets that cost an entirely reasonable $62.

The Turlock Unified School District board approved a map Tuesday night that changes the geographic areas each trustee represents to reflect updated population numbers.

The City of Turlock will continue its long-standing tradition of naming parks after former mayors following a City Council decision last week to name a future one after John Lazar.
