A motorcycle crash on Pedras Road claimed the life of Owen McDonald killed Monday afternoon.

The deadly crash occurred around 4:20 PM when a Hyundai Accent driver attempted to make a left turn onto North Golden State from Pedras Road.

Turlock Nerf Group Looks to Combine Fitness and Hobby in Local Community

A local group formed on Facebook has given community members an opportunity to discover a new way to have fun while exercising with friends.

Turlock Nerf Group organizes monthly events consisting of multiple games involving foam blasters with the goal of promoting a fun reason to get out of the house, interact with other individuals in a safe environment, and exercising in a way that feels more like a game instead of a chore.

Group creator and blaster enthusiast Wally White oversees the growing group while also organizing the free to attend events.

Robber lets customer pay, then takes money

The Turlock Police Department is investigating a robbery in which the robber took money from a convenience store, then let a customer make their purchase and afterwards took that money from the clerk.

The robbery happened at 4:42 a.m. Friday at the Arco AM/PM in the 2200 block of Lander Avenue.

HONORING TURLOCK’S HEROES

The City of Turlock’s Veterans Day celebration took place at a new location this year, but support for those who have served was at an all-time high. 

U.S. military members past and present were honored during a special ceremony at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex on Thursday morning, where high school performers, local dignitaries and others from throughout the community gathered to say “thank you” to service members for their sacrifice.

Council approves contract for roads program to begin

The Roads Initiative Program is officially underway in Turlock after the City Council on Tuesday approved nearly $1 million in Measure A funding to be used for its professional planning and preliminary design. 

In a split vote, with Councilmembers Nicole Larson and Andrew Nosrati dissenting, an agreement with Michael Baker International, Inc. in the amount of $844,642.50 as well as an additional $85,000 in contingency funding was approved by the Council, earmarking $929,643 from the Measure A fund to kickstart a five-year plan to fix Turlock’s roads.

Human infection of mosquito-borne illness found in Stanislaus County

A Stanislaus County woman has become the first person this year in the county to be diagnosed with St. Louis encephalitis virus, according to the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency.

The woman's name and hometown were not released. She is in her 50s. She had neurologic symptoms and was tested in September; confirmatory testing was performed by the California Department of Public Health and recently released by the SCHSA.

Turlock to honor veterans with annual ceremony

in Events

The City of Turlock will acknowledge and celebrate veterans on Thursday as part of its annual ceremony, but this year the longtime event moves to a new location to allow even more participants.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, community members, veterans and local dignitaries will gather at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex for a morning of music and patriotism. Historically, the City has held the ceremony in downtown’s Central Park by the cannon; however, staff felt that this year, a larger venue with plenty of outdoor space would allow as many attendees as possible.

Collision between vehicle, motorcycle leaves one dead in Turlock

The driver of a motorcycle that crashed into a sedan Monday afternoon in Turlock has died from his injuries, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The victim was identified as Owen McDonald, 32, of Turlock. 

The collision happened at 4:21 p.m. Monday at the intersection of North Golden State Boulevard and Pedras Road.

TUSD welcomes alumni to help further equity initiatives

in Education/School

In an effort to make sure that all students have equal access to resources and educational support, the Turlock Unified School District has hired a new equity coordinator.

The TUSD Board of Trustees approved Angélica Cárdenas Ayala for the position of Coordinator of Equity Initiatives, effective Wednesday.

Ayala’s background includes an MA in Education, Counseling and a BA in Politics and Spanish. She recently held the position of Lead Counselor at ACE Charter High School in San Jose and previously worked for Aspire Public Schools in her work to guide students to pursue higher education.

Hans Visser: 50 years of City service

Residents driving past some of Turlock’s largest sycamore trees or the grassy shores of Donnelly Park may not know what these beloved landmarks looked like 50 years ago, but City of Turlock employee Hans Visser does. 

The senior maintenance worker in the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities department was recently honored by the City Council for five decades of service, working his way up the ranks and through different divisions over the years to become the perfect example of career longevity.
