CA city revokes cannabis shop license after owner pleads guilty to bribery

The coastal California town of San Luis Obispo announced it was revoking a business license for Natural Healing Center, a cannabis shop whose owner, Helios Dayspring, pleaded guilty to two felony charges this summer.

Natural Healing Center had not yet opened for business but was poised to do so as one of three retailers granted an initial permit, San Luis Obispo TV station KSBY reported.

Kids walk out, join parents in vaccination mandates

A number of parents throughout Stanislaus County pulled their kids from public school on Wednesday in protest of Governor Gavin Newsom’s forthcoming mandate that children in middle school and older be vaccinated against COVID as a condition to being in the classroom.

Many of those parents and children staged a loud protest in front of the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) with placards, chants and shared conversation, calling for an end to the governor’s mandate.

Turlock Gospel Mission’s second annual Turlock Top Chef competition is set to be held later this month, bringing back a new tradition which started successfully in 2019, but was put on halt last year due to the pandemic. This time, instead of four of the city’s top culinary masters putting their knives to the test, four of the area’s most popular food trucks will face off while feeding the masses.

Federal case against Turlock doctor dropped

A Turlock dermatologist has had federal insurance billing fraud charges dropped against him after he agreed to repay the money.

In 2017, a federal grand jury returned an eight-count indictment against Dr. Basil Hantash, 44, of Hughson, charging him with health care fraud, according to the United States Attorney General’s Office. Dr. Hantash is a dermatologist and the medical director of Advanced Skin Institute in Turlock.

The Harvest Bowl may have taken place in October instead of November on Friday night, but one thing remained the same: the Turlock High varsity football team defeated Pitman High 35-0 en route to their eighth-straight victory over their crosstown rivals.

The Bulldogs (2-4 overall, 1-0 CCAL) and Pride (1-4 overall, 0-1 CCAL) kicked off Central California Athletic League play against each other this week with the 18th annual Harvest Bowl — a rivalry game which brings the two adversaries together during what is typically the last league game of the season. This year, however, it was the first.

Patterson becomes first Stanislaus County city to require this COVID safety measure

Anyone attending a Patterson City Council meeting in person must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative test result starting Tuesday.

Patterson is the first Stanislaus County city to require such documentation and City Manager Ken Irwin said the council feels it is the safest way to physically open meetings.

All council members, city staff and the public must show identification plus vaccination or a negative test taken within three days to enter the chambers, Irwin said in an email. People can still participate remotely via teleconference on Zoom, per the meeting agenda. But Tuesday marks the first Patterson council meeting physically open to the public since February 2020, before the first California stay-at-home order for the coronavirus pandemic.

During the pandemic, Turlock Unified School District noticed that gardens at the elementary schools were unused due to a lack of students and personnel to attend to them. This provided the opportunity for high school Agriculture interns and the TUSD Farm to work together in bringing those gardens back to life before students returned to campuses this fall. During this process, it was noted that four of the elementary sites in the Turlock district did not have access to gardens on their campuses.

“Turlock Unified School District strives to educate all students through an equity lens, including access to live learning labs. With support of district personnel and the school board, the TUSD Farm and interns began to focus on how to implement gardens for all elementary sites,” said Coordinator of Environmental Studies and Applied Horticulture Hail Bream.

Turlock’s Sargis seeking continued success for Sac Republic

Since signing his first professional soccer contract in early 2020, Turlock native Hayden Sargis has made a name for himself as a member of Sacramento Republic FC. Now, the 19-year-old is fighting through injury to continue that success as he returns to the pitch this weekend. 

Sargis picked up a soccer ball almost as soon as he could walk, starting at age four and advancing as far as the Olympic Development Program and the East Valley FC Earthquakes by age 13. Sargis became a member of the Republic FC Academy system at its inception in 2015 and became known as a reliable defender, notching 109 appearances, 92 starts and three goals in U.S. Development Academy action. 

His prowess on the pitch earned Sargis his first-ever contract, which he signed with Republic FC prior to the 2020 USL Championship season and viewed as a lifelong goal finally attained. Although currently playing as a USL team, Republic FC will make the move to MLS come 2022.
