Do you need to be vaxxed to work, learn and visit Stanislaus State? We sort it out.

in Health

Keeping with the California State University system’s decision, Stanislaus State will require students, faculty and staff coming on campus to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Students taking all of their courses online are still “highly encouraged to get vaccinated in the event they need to access campus services during the fall term,” Stanislaus State President Ellen Junn said in a Tuesday message to students.

The CSU announced Tuesday that it will mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for people coming to all 23 campuses. Deadlines for students, faculty and staff to certify their vaccination will depend on each campus’s academic calendars, but all must be completed by Sept. 30, according to a CSU press release.

California keeps adding low-wage jobs. Can it find a way to save its middle class?

in Economy

California is becoming less equal every day.

The state’s 100 richest residents had $815.5 billion in net worth as of September 2020, up 18% from 2019, according to Forbes.

Yet Rey Justo and his family of six in Sacramento were living between a Honda Pilot and his in-law’s living room.

The top 1% of Californians earned at least $659,000 in 2020.

But Omar Yacoubi was putting in a 12-hour workday driving for Uber in the Bay Area last year after he found himself without a stable gig as a software designer.

“Income inequality has risen sharply in California over the past two decades, increasing faster in the state than in the nation as a whole.” A researcher at the Public Policy Institute of California, Deborah Reed, said that more than two decades ago, in 1999.

In the intervening years, California spent billions to fight poverty. A tech boom led Californians to gain billions in wealth.

Saving lives, one video at a time

in Animals

Peter Carlos, RVT, has been a veterinary technician for the past decade and works at the Taylor ER Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Turlock, California. Nearly 4 years ago, his path intertwined with the bright and bubbly Jaycee Leonardo, who joined the team as an assistant at just 16 years old.

Not so long ago, the duo combined forces in an unexpected way and have since become social media sensations within veterinary medicine.

“We became such great friends working together and are constantly joking around. We think the same things are funny and have the same sense of humor. We sing, dance, and make work fun,” says Leonardo.

Carlos agrees. “We do have an age gap, but our friendship really grew from liking and laughing at the same things. We just make work fun, so the stress of daily veterinary medicine doesn’t burn us out.”

At the height of the pandemic last year, the pair started an account on TikTok, a newly popular (at that time) video-sharing app. It was a slow day at the clinic when Carlos decided he wanted them to perform the viral “foot shake dance challenge” that had been spreading like wildfire among the medical community. After posting that video, they decided TikTok was something they wanted to pursue and continued to post.

These Modesto-area firefighters were in the right place when a jet crashed in Truckee

in Accident/News

Firefighters from a Stanislaus County strike team had left one massive wildfire and were headed to another Monday afternoon when they saw the fiery crash of a jet aircraft that smashed into trees as it was trying to land at the Truckee Tahoe Airport.

The five-engine strike team was on its way to Chico to join the firefighters at the Dixie Fire after spending a week helping fight the Tamarack Fire when the jet crashed about 1:20 p.m. The team was a mile or so away from when the jet crashed, said Tim Tietjen, the Modesto Fire Department’s division chief and the strike team leader.

Big Rig Trailer Collapses In On Itself Along Highway 99 In Turlock

in Local Roundup

TURLOCK (CBS13) — Traffic is slow on northbound Highway 99 through Turlock due to a big rig trailer that looks like it partially imploded on itself Monday morning.

Turlock’s Westside Ministries asks for community support as demand for free food rises

in Local Roundup

Westside Ministries of Turlock is asking for community support to fund its food literacy program, which allows it to provide food for the underserved.

Since before the pandemic, the organization has provided free meals for the community as a result of youth tending to its garden. As one of five finalists in heavy-equipment maker Kubota’s competition, which awards the winner $100,000 and loaned equipment, Westside wanted to continue this effort but was outnumbered by 506 votes, said the executive director.

But losing won’t stop Westside from serving the community. Jolynn DiGrazia, the ministries’ executive director, said kids and teens come out to the garden around 8 a.m., ready to work as demand for free food has doubled during the pandemic.

Mosquito activity on the rise this summer

in Around California

As the temperature climbs and mosquito activity increases, local health departments are reminding residents to take precautions against catching West Nile virus, as the California Department of Public Health reported the first death from West Nile Virus for the season.

The death was reported in San Luis Obispo County.

“West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing, so I urge Californians to take every possible precaution to protect against mosquito bites,” said Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer.

As of July 9, WNV has been detected in 45 dead birds from 6 counties and 177 mosquito samples from 13 counties. Hot temperatures this month are contributing to increasing numbers of mosquitoes and the increased risk of virus transmission to humans. So far this season, activity is within expected levels. The risk of disease due to WNV usually increases at this time of year and is highest throughout the summer and early fall.

Wetzel’s Pretzels opens permanent location in Monte Vista Crossings

in business

After a summer season in 2020 traveling throughout Turlock in a food truck, Wetzel’s Pretzels is officially serving customers out of a new brick-and-mortar location at Monte Vista Crossings.

Located in the former Dickey’s Barbecue Pit space next to Jamba Juice, Gyros & More and Panda Express, Turlock resident Tony Zaia couldn’t be happier to open his fourth Wetzel’s Pretzels restaurant in his own community. Zaia owns and operates three other locations in the Modesto and Merced malls and was forced to sell in Turlock out of the company’s food truck when the pandemic first hit last year.

He had been hoping for a spot in Monte Vista Crossings for over five years, he said, and the community’s support of the Wetzel’s Pretzel’s truck only confirmed that Turlock would be the perfect landing spot for his next store.

“This has really been special here in Turlock. From day one when we brought in the truck until now, the community has been extremely supportive,” Zaia said. “COVID created an opportunity and when they called me to say there was an open spot, I jumped on it because I’ve been waiting for a long time. I knew that location is robust and busy, and so far it’s been true to my thinking.”

The new Wetzel’s Pretzels in Turlock celebrated its grand opening last Friday and the community celebrated, too. Now Turlockers have a permanent, one-stop shop for all of their pretzel needs, from knots topped with jalapenos and pepperoni to sweet, cinnamon-topped bites.
