How Stanislaus’ $832 million in COVID relief helped the county’s smallest businesses

Leave it to a global pandemic to test the limits of the saying “Every little bit helps.”

Last spring, as the Central Valley and the entire nation reeled from the COVID-19 pandemic, relief money began to flood into the area from the federal government. The much lauded, and also maligned, Paycheck Protection Program began doling out forgivable loans of up to $10 million dollars to businesses small and not-so-small across the region.

But the data on the smaller businesses — those receiving less than $150,000 from the Treasury Department-supported program — was not released until late last year. The more complete release of PPP information paints a clearer picture of who got what in Modesto and across the valley.

With loans ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few million, the program has given out a total of more than $832 million to Stanislaus County businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration that has been reviewed by The Bee.

Turlock Police Report Spike In Cars Being Left On Blocks After Rim Thefts

TURLOCK (CBS13) — Police are alerting Turlock residents about a spike in cars being left on blocks after having their rims and tires stolen.

Turlock police say that, since mid-February, they’ve fielded at least 12 reports of cars having their rims and tires stolen overnight. The victims often walk out to their vehicles, only to find them on bricks and cinder blocks.

It appears that the suspects are targeting newer-model Toyota Corollas, Camrys, and Honda Accords with stock sport rims and tires.

Police say six of the thefts have happened in apartment complex parking lots.

Council votes 3-1 to keep retail recruitment firm

The Ceres City Council voted 3-1 on Monday to keep its existing contract with The Retail Coach, a firm that was hired in 2020 to help the city attract new retail businesses.

The Retail Coach (TRC) has created a “Developer Opportunity Package” for each targeted retailer of specific restaurant/retailers that has been the focus of marketing efforts. The firm has been actively recruiting retailers, as well as commercial developers, on Ceres’ behalf.  Additionally, TRC is assisting marketing efforts to retailers, developers, and brokers at retail industry conference and trade shows as well as provide ongoing coaching and support.

Vice Mayor Couper Condit pulled the item from the consent agenda saying he could not support the $25,000 contract “when we have a part-time economic development director, Steve Hallam, who makes around $50,000.” He also mentioned the city’s partnership with Opportunity Stanislaus, a local non-profit organization and the Ceres Chamber of Commerce. He suggested using the money for a small business loan or grant.

209 Seahawks open season with 12-7 loss

The Ceres-based 209 Seahawks Football Club’s newly-formed 10-and-under team competed for the first time this past weekend.

The 209 Seahawks lost 12-7 to the host Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

“I wasn’t expecting us to play as well as we did knowing this group of kids haven’t played a game in a year and a half,” head coach Jose Ortiz said. “They went above and beyond my expectations. The most enjoyable part was watching them have fun.”

Sean Nunez accounted for the 209 Seahawks’ lone touchdown.

He returned a fumble, which was forced by Elias Harris, for a TD.

School district acquiring thousands of COVID tests for athletes

As Turlock Unified School District prepares for the return of football next week, a robust COVID testing regimen has been adapted so that teams can meet guidelines set forth by the state and remain safe while playing. 

On Tuesday, Stanislaus County fell below the adjusted daily case rate of 14 or fewer per 100,000 residents which was previously required in order for high- and moderate-contact outdoor sports to be played, dropping down to 13.6. However, updated guidelines released by the state last week following a lawsuit in San Diego specify that all sports teams can return to play no matter their county’s daily case rate, as long as they adhere to the stricter requirements in place for college teams. 

One of those requirements is the regular testing of athletes and support staff in order to prevent any COVID outbreaks. With Central California Athletic League football play set to begin next week, weekly testing is already underway for players at Turlock and Pitman high schools. For indoor sports like volleyball, baseline testing and ongoing screening testing must be completed on a regular basis. The CCAL is looking into the viability of scheduling indoor sports, but football is scheduled and the first games will be played next Friday.

Pitman High School alum Mishael Moran was working as part of Sacramento’s food scene when COVID-19 changed life as we know it. When the pandemic caused his hours to be cut, he decided to move back to Turlock and become his own boss.

Moran opened his own catering company and portable food kitchen, Flip N Fry, last week, utilizing his knowledge of the restaurant industry to create a business which values quality over convenience. At Flip N Fry, Moran and his family-turned-coworkers grind their own beef for burgers and breads their own chicken for sandwiches — something Moran believes sets them apart from other lunch spots in town.

“Nothing is ever frozen. We make sure it’s fresh,” Moran said. “We’re trying to offer something you would find at a barbecue, taking things you would find at a burger joint and trying to upscale them. It’s nothing like other things you see around here.”

One of those unique items is Moran’s loaded fries, which can be topped with buffalo chicken, carne asada or even a fried egg, depending on the customer’s preference.

Fully vaccinated people can gather without masks, CDC says

Fully vaccinated Americans can gather with other vaccinated people indoors without wearing a mask or social distancing. That's according to long-awaited guidance from federal health officials. 

The recommendations were announced Monday. They also say that vaccinated people can come together in the same way with people considered at low-risk for severe disease, such as in the case of vaccinated grandparents visiting healthy children and grandchildren. 

Sacramento Metro Fire's Captain Chris Vestal is one of the frontline workers who has been fully vaccinated.

Sunday night's episode saw another round of singers step in front of the judges in the hopes of scoring a golden ticket to Hollywood. Among them was Ash Ruder, a 21-year-old social media manager from Turlock, California, who came to the audition accompanied by her dad.

Though Ruder's dad is the inspiration for her music, their relationship hasn't always great. According to the singer, her father has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction since she was very young.

"By the time that I got older, I was super angry with my dad," she said. "But the few times that my dad would show up, it meant the world to me, and I know that he felt ashamed and felt guilt."
