Election 2020: 3 Northern California races you might have missed

CALIFORNIA, USA — Leads are building in contested races throughout San Joaquin County and Stanislaus County as more votes get tallied in the 2020 election.

One notable contest has been the Stockton mayoral race between Kevin Lincoln and Mayor Michael Tubbs. In the most recent update from San Joaquin County, Lincoln grew his lead against Tubbs, but the elections office said there are many ballots left to count.

Other big races included contests for Congressional Districts 9 and 10, the Associated Press called the races for incumbents Congressman Jerry McNerney and Congressman Josh Harder, respectively.

Annual ‘Shoebox’ Effort Sets Local Collection Dates

The River Christian Community Church in Oakdale will once again be the collection point for the local Operation Christmas Child effort.

National Collection Week is scheduled from Monday, Nov. 16 through Monday, Nov. 23 with different hours available for drop-off of the shoeboxes. The operation, through Samaritan’s Purse, provides small gifts, toiletries, and more for youngsters in over 150 countries. You can pick the age and gender of the child you wish to provide a shoebox for; suggestions for items to include are available online at the Operation Christmas Child website. The shoeboxes can be picked up at the church, 1351 E. G St., Oakdale, so you can pack them and bring them back to the church during the upcoming collection week.

In this area, in addition to Oakdale, there are collection sites in Escalon, Modesto, Manteca, Ceres, Patterson, Tracy, Waterford, Stockton, Copperopolis and Turlock.

Turlock senior uses downtime during pandemic to give back

When Melanie Sharene George realized she would be spending more time inside of her home due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Covenant Living of Turlock resident decided to make the most of the stay-at-home orders by hand-knitting gifts for a local charity. 

Since March, 89-year-old George has kept her hands busy by crafting 50 hats and 26 baby blankets for the Turlock Pregnancy and Health Center — all while challenged with macular degeneration, which hinders her sight. An avid knitter and crocheter since age 13, George first learned how to knit when she arrived in America from Iran in 1950. She made dresses for herself, she said, when she wasn’t allowed to bring her own overseas.

Now, her talents have translated into handmade comfort for those in need.

County downtown business program doubles customers’ spending dollars

A downtown business program that started in Modesto and pays customers for shopping local has been expanded to include Turlock and all cities in Stanislaus County.

The RAD Card, or, “Relief Across Downtown” Card, is a digital gift card created by the Downtown Modesto Partnership this summer. It was originally focused on aiding downtown Modesto businesses but with the commitment of one million dollars from Stanislaus County CARES Act, the RAD Card program will now expand to downtowns in all cities and unincorporated communities countywide.

When a customer downloads the RAD Card app, their purchase amount of either $25, $50, $75 or $100 is automatically matched, doubling the funds in the customer’s RAD Card account. The customer’s app is then assigned a unique QR code that can be scanned by participating restaurants, retailers and personal care services when a transaction occurs.

With postal delays expected this election as California conducts more widespread mail-in voting than ever before, many voters are anxious about their ballots being received on time — and counted.

This year, California rolled out a new tool: WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov. It lets voters track their mail ballot from the point it’s sent to them until it’s been accepted and counted by their local elections office.

The site will also let you sign up for email, text or phone call updates on your ballot’s status.

If you haven’t yet mailed your ballot, should you take it directly to a polling location? Not necessarily. This year in California, mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day will still be counted as long as they are received by Nov. 20 — or 17 days after Election Day, compared to the usual three.

Coronavirus Cluster Infects 8 Turlock Firefighters

TURLOCK (CBS13) — The Turlock Fire Department is battling a cluster of coronavirus infections.

Interim Fire Chief Gary Carlson says so far he’s received eight positive tests in his department out of only 42 firefighters on his staff. The cases are all from firefighters working out of station one and station three.

The department’s four stations will continue operating, staffing shifts with firefighter overtime.

“We do have protocols in place to keep the stations isolated with the exception of emergency calls. But we have a duty to the city to respond to all emergencies,” Chief Carlson said.

Stanislaus County family rescues fox cub stuck in gardening wire

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — A Stanislaus County family stepped up Wednesday to help a fox in need.

The Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center shared some photos of an injured fox Wednesday. The family has been trying to save the fox cub for months after discovering it had become entangled in gardening wire.

Because the fox cub was growing, its body grew around the wire, wildlife officials said.

Thankfully, the family was finally able to capture the cub and take it to the wildlife center.
