Stanislaus County website teaches business owners how to safely reopen during pandemic

MODESTO, Calif. (KTXL) — When it comes to tacos, burritos and nachos, the chefs at Taqueria Mis Compadres on Sylvan Avenue in Modesto know how to cook it up.

But when it comes to state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on reopening amid the COVID-19 crisis, manager Nayeli Vazquez told FOX40 she and her staff got a little help.

“It’s not only basic training but it reinforces everything that you should be doing in a restaurant already,” said Vazquez.

Dave White is the CEO of Opportunity Stanislaus and he told FOX40 that county leaders worked to ensure mom-and-pop shops had access to CDC and state guidelines on how to safely reopen.

“Simply put, he was in a spot on our board where — we’re in the business of best available player,” amateur scouting director Michael Holmes said in a Zoom news conference Wednesday night, a successful first venture into the new normal. “It was just too good of a talent for us not to be in play on. Everybody that we sent in to see him — despite the fact it was a shorter season — every guy that came out of there felt really good about his ability, both on the offensive and defensive side. And we really think we got a guy that can impact the game on both sides of the baseball. Guys like that, you can never have too many of them in the system.”

The downtown market filled with locally grown produce and handcrafted goods typically opens during the first weekend of May, but stay-at-home orders throughout the state forced the TCFM Board to postpone the outdoor shopping event until June. It was TCFM Board President Brandon Follett’s hope that despite nearby markets starting back up at that time, a later opening date would put TCFM in step with other downtown businesses as they were slowly allowed to reopen.

Twenty seven years after the San Francisco Giants selected Turlock, Calif. native Steve Soderstrom with the sixth overall pick in the MLB Draft, another Turlock product is expected to be in the mix when the team is on the clock in Wednesday’s first round.

Soderstrom, who appeared in three games for the Giants during the 1996 season, can vouch for the 18-year-old catching prospect’s talents.

It’s his son, Tyler.

Only nine father-son duos have been taken in the first round of the MLB Draft and none were chosen by the same team. With the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Giants and the Soderstrom family can make history.

“It would be super special,” Tyler said. “It’s been my dream to play in the major leagues since I found out my dad played professional baseball. My dad is my mentor.”

Wildfire danger: Red-flag warning from Delta to Sierra foothills

A red-flag warning, indicating elevated wildfire conditions, has been issued by the National Weather Service for a swath of Northern California including the Carquinez Strait.

The warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday.

It extends from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to the northern San Joaquin Valley and the southern Sacramento Valley, comprising parts of the counties of Solano, Yolo, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Sutter.

Dry north to northwesterly winds of 15 to 20 mph are forecast, with gusts up to 30 mph. Humidity during the day is expected to be 10 to 13 percent.

In a lawsuit, Norma Zuniga alleges her husband caught the virus while working in dangerous conditions at Safeway’s Tracy Distribution Center, where at least 51 workers tested positive for COVID-19.

Zuniga is seeking punitive and general damages of an unspecified amount from Safeway and its parent company, Albertsons Companies, according the complaint filed on May 13 in the Alameda County Superior Court. The complaint claims Safeway threatened to discipline Pedro Zuniga and his coworkers when they raised concerns about issues including the lack of personal protective equipment and how closely they worked despite social distancing guidelines.
