Ceres after school students offered free sports camps, professional coaching

Free on-site sports camps and professional coaching are provided to fourth- through-sixth-graders enrolled in the Ceres Unified School District’s After School Education and Safety (ASES) program thanks to a new partnership with Turlock Sports Park, Inc.

The program is offered at all 14 of CUSD’s elementary campuses.

Hidden homeless caves found dug into Tuolumne River bank in Modesto

Hidden homeless caves tucked along the Tuolumne River were cleared out by volunteer groups and the Modesto Police Department over the weekend.

Volunteers from Operation 9-2-99 and the Tuolumne River Trust partnered with the Modesto Police Department to clear out 7,600 pounds of trash. They also had two truckloads and a trailer of garbage that were removed from the area.

Local artists shine in ‘Light Motifs’ exhibit

In a new Lobby Gallery exhibition, Light Motifs, the Carnegie Arts Center shares works created by 36 artists from 16 Northern California communities.

Jurors for the exhibition are two esteemed artists whose expertise in the use of light is well known. Carolyn Lord is a Bay Area painter and a signature member of the California Art Club, the National Watercolor Society, and the California Watercolor Association.  G. Dan Mitchell is a photographer based in San Jose; he was the 2018 Yosemite Renaissance Artist in Residence at Yosemite National Park and is the author of “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide to Autumn in the Sierras.”

Turlock nursing home to close citing costs, workforce challenges

Dozens of seniors are now looking for a new place stay as their nursing home in Turlock prepares to close.

Brandel Manor is a 145-bed facility providing post-acute, long-term care and assisted living. The facility notified residents and families about their upcoming closure on Jan. 15.

Turlock school placed on lockdown and people detained after report of shots fired

An elementary school in Turlock was placed on lockdown and several people were detained after gunshots were reportedly fired nearby.

At around 10:30 a.m. Monday, police were told that gunshots were fired in the area of Lander and Linwood avenues. Nearby, Cunningham Elementary School was placed on a precautionary lockdown as police investigated the incident.

Highway 99 sees closures from flooding, heavy traffic and jackknifed semi-truck, CHP says

Because of flooding and a jackknifed semi-truck on the southbound side of Highway 99 in Modesto on Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol urged drivers to find other routes.

The pair of incidents caused major delays for commuters, according to the CHP’s Modesto office. By 8:30 a.m. it appeared that both were being addressed. However, the traffic backup was expected to last well after that.

Stanislaus has redone some streets to aid pedestrians and cyclists. Here is a sampling

Streets are not just for motor vehicles, advocates for walkers and bicyclists have argued in Stanislaus County and beyond.

The county has several recent and current projects aimed at slowing cars and trucks near schools and other busy spots.

Pedestrians at some crosswalks now can press a button that triggers flashing warning lights for drivers. Some corners have “bulb-outs,” where the sidewalk extends into the parking lane to make people on foot more visible.

Everything from ice skating with Half Dome views, snow play options, x-country plus downhill skiing

The great thing about living in the Northern San Joaquin Valley is the snow is where it belongs – up in the mountains and not down here.

That means there is plenty of snow — and skiing — in the 209’s backyard that’s within two to three hours of Manteca, Turlock, Ripon, Lathrop, Ceres, and Oakdale.

This year there are five skiing options and plenty of snow play areas in the 209 as well as the venerable Curry Village ice skating rink.

Area police agencies cooperate in fraud case

Following an investigation of several days, a New York man was taken into custody on fraud charges by the Oakdale Police Department.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, Oakdale Police reminded residents to “Beware of skimming devices that can steal your personal information.”

The post also indicated that, with the help of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and City of Turlock - Turlock Police Department, the 55-year-old man was arrested for placing skimming devices on several area ATMs.
