TUSD schools improve, still fall below state standards

Turlock Unified School District’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday received information regarding recent data from the California Department of Education’s Dashboard website, which shows schools’ achievement ratings achievement ratings in several key categories. While TUSD schools improved their scores in many of these sections, many campuses are still struggling to meet state standards overall.

The Dashboard site displays statewide data based on status (how each school or district performed) and change (how much they have improved since the last year), with performance levels indicated by color ranging from red as the lowest and blue as the highest.

California police: Driver rammed into car, killing 3 teens

A Southern California driver intentionally rammed a Toyota Prius with six teenage boys inside, killing three and injuring three others before fleeing, authorities said Monday.

The Prius went off the road and slammed into a tree at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in Temescal Valley in Riverside County, southeast of Los Angeles.

Anurag Chandra, 42, of Corona was arrested a short time later in a neighborhood near the crash site, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Family plunges into icy lake after passing warning signs, California rescuers say

A family of three is safe after they plunged through ice and into freezing water in California on Saturday, police say.

Around 2:30 p.m., police arrived at Big Bear Lake to learn a father, mother and their child had fallen through the ice while they were out playing on the frozen lake, KTTV reported.

“The two ladies were yelling but they were kind of thrashing around which is the worst thing to do in ice apparently,” witness Sandy Bussey told KNBC. “We were just trying to yell at them, ‘stay calm don’t move, just hold on.’”

One of four defendants in Turlock’s Donnelly Park homicide pleads guilty

One of four defendants charged with robbing and beating a man to death in Turlock’s Donnelly Park in 2017 has taken a plea deal with a six-year sentence.

Terry Van Meter of Manteca was 16 when he and three others were arrested in the murder of 21-year-old Cameron Tracy, who was beaten unconscious with a metal baseball bat on Dec. 4, 2017. Tracy died from his injuries on Dec. 13.

Van Meter, Shaun Santos, 24, and Lavinia Perez, 41, both of Modesto, were charged with murder and two counts of robbery for the attack on Tracy and his girlfriend, as well as with two other robberies at the park the week before.

Teen killed in double shooting after vehicle opens fire on a Fresno County highway, CHP says.

A teenager was killed in a double shooting that left a portion of Highway 145 in southern Fresno County closed Wednesday afternoon, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.

The 17-year-old was shot in his lower body and flown to a hospital in Hanford, where he died, said spokesperson Tony Botti. The second victim, an 18-year-old man, had a non-lethal gunshot wound to the arm.

Turlock man suffers major injuries in hit-and-run crash near Delhi, CHP says

A 22-year-old Turlock man suffered major injuries Monday near Delhi when he was struck by a vehicle in a felony hit-and-run collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to Officer Eric Zuniga, the man said he was walking southbound on the west shoulder of Griffith Road when he was struck by a Ford truck of unknown color and make shortly before 7 a.m. Au

It’s unknown if the vehicle sustained damage in the collision. The victim said the truck was driving northbound on Griffith Road, north of West Bradbury Road, when it made a U-turn across both lanes and struck him.
