Bulldog thrower signs to West Point

Turlock High alum Jake Dirkse has had big dreams and goals from a young age, one of them was to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and compete in collegiate athletics at the NCAA Division-I level.

On Jan. 2, that goal came to fruition when Dirkse signed his National Letter of Intent after receiving a full-ride scholarship for track and field to compete in the shot-put, discus and javelin for the D-I athletic program.

Bus signal priority systems expanding in California

Supplier of applied informatics systems for the transportation industry, Iteris Inc. is continuing to expand its multimodal transport and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) initiatives with the award of a new transit priority system in California.

Iteris has just been awarded US$707,000 from the City of Gardena to provide design services as part of the bus signal priority (BSP) project for Gardena Transit (GTrans) bus Line 2, representing a continued expansion of the company’s BSP leadership in southern California. Under the terms of the one-year agreement, Iteris will provide design services, procurement, testing and oversight, as well as construction support to enable operations on the new BSP system at major signalised intersections in compliance with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LA Metro) Countywide Signal Priority program. Task orders for three years of operation and maintenance (O&M) services are pending, and include the option for two additional years of O&M. This is Iteris’ seventh BSP project in southern California, bringing total deployments of the company’s BSP connected bus solutions to over 500 intersections in the region.

Oakdale sophomore Michael Torres finished second in the 106-pound division at the 2020 Doc Buchanan Invitational on Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

The tournament is “one of the toughest in the country” according to FloWrestling.

Torres fell to Buchanan junior Raymond Lopez in the finals. Buchanan finished first as a team.

Pitman’s Kendall La Rosa (fifth), Juan Mora (fifth), Izzy Tubera (sixth), and Oakdale sophomore Ceasar Garza (eighth) also placed.

All five local wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 in their divisions by CalWrestler. Pitman is No. 11 in team rankings.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has said he is crafting plans focused on local lockups, where homicides have surged, and exploring how to give the state more power to oversee the sheriffs who run them. More details are expected this week when the governor unveils his state budget proposal.

Deadly U.S. drone strike prompts student-led anti-war march, rally in Modesto

About 40 people joined in a student-organized march and rally Sunday afternoon in protest of the U.S. drone strike Friday that killed Iran’s most powerful general.

Carrying signs with messages including “No Iran war” and “End colonial occupation,” the crowd — mostly college age, but also including the middle aged, seniors and children — took a roundabout path from Graceada Park to Tenth Street Plaza. The marchers went northeast on L Street, southwest on Ninth past the bus depot, then northeast on I before turning onto 10th and ending at the plaza.

The owners have lined up a buyer to continue operating the rink that has been a boon for downtown and offers family friendly fun.

Turlock husband and wife Dave and Kathy Halsey are in the process of buying Modesto On Ice and expect the purchase will be completed after the current season ends Jan. 20.

Turlock’s Johnson earns football honor; Modesto Christian boys open league play

Turlock High’s Everett Johnson was named Lineman of the Year by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Thirteen Stanislaus District football players were among those named to the first team or honorable mention by a committee of high school coaches representing the north and south regions — as well as small, medium and large schools — that make up the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Last month, Johnson signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of California.

The 6-foot-7, 312-pound Johnson will graduate Turlock and enroll at Cal on Jan. 16.

A magnitude 4 earthquake that ruptured in the Pacific Ocean sent weak shaking into Ventura County and across the Westside, San Fernando Valley and South Bay areas of Los Angeles County.

The earthquake hit at 2:13 a.m. Thursday about 19 miles south of Oxnard in Ventura County and about 15 miles southwest of Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu.

Malibu’s Point Dume is about 25 miles northeast of the epicenter, and Santa Monica is about 40 miles east of the earthquake’s origin. Downtown L.A. is almost 55 miles away from the epicenter.

MODESTO, Calif. (KTXL) — A suspect crashed a stolen pickup truck into a woman’s car Tuesday in Modesto, injuring her and the child who was with her.

Around 9:30 a.m., Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies went to the area of South Carpenter Road and California Avenue to investigate reports of a Toyota Tacoma that had been stolen from a home, according to police.

The Modesto Police Department says deputies spotted the Tacoma but lost sight of it until Modesto officers saw it just before 10 a.m. A man behind the wheel was driving recklessly in the area of Paradise Road and Yosemite Avenue.
