Over $65K raised for Salvation Army at Kettle Kickoff

It’s that time of year again where the weather cools down, Christmas lights and trees are put on display and silver bells start ringing in front of stores throughout the country.

Tuesday morning marked the official start of bell ringing season for the Salvation Army Turlock Corp. as its 27th annual Kettle Kickoff luncheon at the Grand Oak Banquet Hall and Event Center welcomed over 440 community members.

2,500 pounds of pot seized by sheriff’s deputies serving warrant near school in Modesto

A search warrant served at an illegal pot grow in Modesto on Friday morning found about 900 plants plus processed marijuana, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The search was conducted about 7 a.m. at a residence on the 900 block of Lenore Court, just east of Mark Twain Jr. High School in west Modesto. Thirteen people initially were taken into custody and four firearms were seized, Sgt. Luke Schwartz told The Bee.

Downtown readies for holiday revelers

With just 12 days until Thanksgiving, that means we’re only 13 days away — less than two weeks — from the annual Friday-after-Thanksgiving tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Turlock.

The holiday season will officially get underway on Nov. 24, when the city’s Christmas tree in Central Park is lit for the first time.

The three-hour downtown event starts at 5 p.m., while the tree will be lit at 6:30 p.m. by Mayor Amy Bublak, for whom the holiday traditions never get old.

Water year ends as third-wettest in history

The region is off to a sluggish start just over a month into the 2023-2024 water year. Then again, the 2022-23 water year didn’t get off to a roaring start, either, and it turned out to be third-wettest year since Turlock Irrigation District began keeping records in 1897.

With 4.13 million acre-feet of runoff, 2023 ranked behind 2017 (4.6 million acre-feet) and 1983 (4.6 million acre-feet).

Man caught up in Stockton sideshow had foot amputated after hit by vehicle

Another fatal hit-and-run. This time a bicyclist is killed in Modesto

A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on the 3700 block of McHenry Avenue on Tuesday evening, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help in looking for a white, or light-colored, 2010 to 2013 model Kia Soul last seen traveling southbound on McHenry Avenue. The vehicle should have had damage to its windshield and passenger side, according to a police statement.

We have in-your-face homelessness due in part to horrible court decision

The Boise decision was a horrible one.

I’m referring to the Martin v. Boise decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in response to a 2009 lawsuit by six homeless plaintiffs against the city of Boise, Idaho regarding the city’s anti-camping ordinance.

The ruling held that cities cannot enforce such ordinances if they do not have enough homeless shelter beds available for their homeless population. It did not necessarily mean a city cannot enforce any restrictions on camping on public property.
