Mac and cheese tacos, other comfort foods coming to Turlock with new national chain

Do you love macaroni and cheese? Stupid question, let me rephrase that. How much do you love mac and cheese?

So much that you’d eat it in a sandwich? Or maybe in a taco?

Because both those versions, plus a variety of regular mac and cheese bowls and other cheesy comfort food offerings, will be served at the new and aptly named I Heart Mac & Cheese. The national chain is coming to Turlock to open its first location in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.

Based in Florida, the franchise has expanded in recent years. Now it has a location planned along West Monte Vista Avenue, across Crowell Road from Stanislaus State University. The new restaurant will go between the existing Domino’s Pizza and Sourdough & Co. in the Warrior Crossing retail strip shared with Dutch Bros Coffee. The company also has locations under development in Fresno and Sacramento.

California’s grid operator moves to enhance reliability, economic prospects for utility-scale energy storage

To accommodate the storage needed to ensure grid reliability as renewable energy grows,  the operator of California’s electricity system is working to improve how it models energy storage to facilitate market participation and increase payments to storage providers. The California Independent System Operator also is revising its model to ensure that large battery projects that are directed specifically to help protect grid frequency do so as instructed.

“There is a great fleet of storage resources that have made a meaningful impact on grid reliability,” Gabe Murtaugh, California Independent System’s storage manager, said during a July 7 workshop on model improvements. “We need to roll up our sleeves” and improve the existing model or introduce a new one, he told stakeholders.

Turlock commuter train extension gets another $57 million. When will cars start rolling?

The state has kicked in another $57 million to help the Altamont Corridor Express reach Turlock.

Train service would start there by 2027 under the latest timeline for expanding the line, which now runs on weekdays between Stockton and San Jose.

Turlock is part of a southern branch that will start with stations by 2024 in Manteca, Ripon, Modesto and Ceres. The branch will have stops as well in Livingston and Merced by 2029. ACE also is expanding north, with stations serving Lodi, Elk Grove and four Sacramento locations by 2024.

Energy storage systems with a large amount of capacity are being developed to cover five sites in California and Hawaii, including one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the world.

The energy storage systems, which have a total capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) and 2-gigawatt hours (GWh), are being supplied by Wärtsilä to clean energy company Clearway Energy Group. The largest of the projects is located in San Bernardina, California, where 482 MW of solar and 275 MW and 1.1 GWh of energy storage are being installed.

These new national businesses opened, others coming soon in Turlock — and one closes

We’re halfway through the year and Turlock retailers already have had a bustling 2022.

Two companies have opened in new locations in the city, three construction projects are underway nearby and, unfortunately, one long-term business is calling it quits.

First, a Modesto-born brand has found a new home in Turlock. 5.11 Tactical, the military and law enforcement-focused apparel company founded by Modesto entrepreneur Dan Costa, opened a new store in Monte Vista Crossings earlier this year. The store, which fills the former Dress Barn space, has been operating in the popular shopping center since March.

The new site sells men’s and women’s outdoor and tactical clothing. The location is the company’s only corporate retail store in Stanislaus County, despite the brand’s origins in Modesto. Costa famously started 5.11 in 1999 with a single pair of pants, and sold the $300 million company in 2007.

While Modesto has stores, like Crescent Supply and Work World, that carry a selection of 5.11 products, there isn’t an official corporate store in the city. 5.11 has a factory store in Manteca. The Monte Vista Crossings 5.11 store at 3005 Countryside Drive is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 209-580-0640.

ACE service to Turlock gets funding

Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail service is moving farther down the line to Turlock.

The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission has been awarded $57 million by the State of California to extend ACE service from Ceres to Turlock.

Funding from the Senate Bill 1 deal in 2017 to increase the state gas tax including money to extend ACE service from Ceres to Sacramento is already in place with at least one train added to go from Ceres to San Jose.

That service will be up and running in 2023.

Ultimately, ACE will be extended to Merced to connect with the California High Speed Rail system.

COVID-19 sharply limited the 2020 and 2021 fairs. The pandemic has receded enough to allow crowds to mingle, carefully, during a 10-day run that starts Friday, July 8.

Will a new oversight position help California’s high speed rail plans get on track?

After a decade of cost, schedule, technical, regulatory, personnel and legal problems, the California high speed rail project will be getting an inspector general soon as part of a deal between Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature.

The new investigative position is intended to intensify oversight and improve performance of the $105 billion railroad project. Enthusiasm for the change is high, but whether it will fix everything is uncertain, even among state leaders.

“There is nothing but problems on the project,” said Speaker Anthony Rendon, a Lakewood Democrat. “The inspector general provides oversight and some sense of what is going on with management. That has been missing for a long time.”

But will it work?

“We don’t know,” Rendon said. “We need to be vigilant. The IG will provide what we need to carry that out.”
