A former principal for a Patterson elementary school passed away over the weekend, school officials said.

The Patterson Joint Unified School District announced Alma Romo's death on Sunday. A spokesperson for the school district didn't have any additional details surrounding her death.

Turlock man dies in Stanislaus County crash

 A Turlock man died in a crash in Stanislaus County Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. along Albers Road, south of Milnes Road. Two people were in a truck heading southbound on Albers Road when the driver swerved off the road and onto the west shoulder. The truck hit a dirt embankment and turned over.

Prep basketball roundup: Gallo Invite Day 1 scores, local boys and girls teams play non-league games

The Mark Gallo Invitational at Central Catholic High School tipped off Tuesday with four games. Modesto’s Beyer, Central Catholic and Downey each earned wins on Day 1 of the tournament. Prince Major (30 points) and Reuben Lewis (27 points) each had impressive scoring nights to lead their teams to wins. Lewis sealed Downey’s first win this season with a pair of free throws.

Get your gifts wrapped at the Farmers Market

Don’t have time on your hands to wrap any Christmas presents? Are you simply just bad at wrapping gifts? Well, fear not, as volunteers from Keyes to Learning Charter Academy will be offering free gift wrapping for the next three weeks at the Turlock Certified Farmers Market.

The idea to offer free gift wrapping originated last holiday season when TCFM marketing director Nick Schuller suggested the idea to Lightly Used Books owner Jenni Brannon. The two hosted a day of gift wrapping at the bookstore. This year, Schuller wants to offer the service to more people for more than just a day.

The Center for Urban Performance and Westside Ministries will once again put on a holiday show with this year’s presentation of “Miss Poinsettia Contest” on Saturday at the Turlock Community Theatre.

This light-hearted, Broadway-style musical comedy will pit the debutantes against the bedrocks competing for one crown. Who will win?

Gang Member’s Deadly Rampage: A Dark Day in California

California has been left in shock following a deadly shooting spree by Louis Peter Hernandez, a 41-year-old known gang member with a history of violence. The tragic events began on November 25th in Fontana, where Hernandez fatally shot his girlfriend and another individual. Moving to Riverside County, the rampage continued with the murder of his ex-girlfriend. A fourth victim also sustained gunshot injuries. Hernandez, who was under probation and post-release community supervision, has been charged with three counts of murder and one count of assault with a firearm.

Santa Truck ready to spread some Christmas joy

Jolly Old St. Nick has parked his sleigh and is letting the reindeer take a breather, as he climbs aboard Turlock’s most beloved fire engine on a mission to visit as many neighborhoods as possible over the next few weeks.

The Santa Truck will be making a tour of the city from today through Dec. 20 thanks to the ongoing efforts of Turlock Fire Incorporated, which began decades ago as a means to bridge the gap as the department transitioned from an all-volunteer fire department to one operated by the City of Turlock. Now, it is the driving force spreading Christmas cheer through Turlock. Fire personnel contribute $15 monthly to make sure the Santa Truck is kept in good working condition and has plenty of candy and holiday cheer to pass out during the city-wide tour.

Read to a Dog returns to Turlock Library

The popular Read to a Dog program is back at the Turlock Library following a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, which takes place every first Saturday of the month from noon to 1 p.m., invites independent readers up to the age of 12 to read to a certified therapy dog inside the library.

The Turlock Library first began hosting the Read to a Dog program in 2011. After a nearly three-year pause, they brought it back in October. Their two events since returning have received rave reviews.
