Another pedestrian dies, days after Modesto police announce grant for new safety efforts

A male pedestrian died Saturday after being struck on McHenry Avenue about midblock between Sylvan and Woodrow avenues, the Modesto Police Department reported.

The crash occurred about 7:20 p.m., according to a Modesto Fire Department incident summary. Emergency responders found the man down in the road, suffering major injuries. He was taken to a medical center, where he died.

Floodwaters on farms help boost aquifers

The historically wet winter early this year motivated greater adoption of a water management strategy known as flood-managed aquifer recharge, or flood-MAR, in which excess flood flows are diverted onto farmland to boost depleted groundwater aquifers.

“We knew from the previous year, even in intense drought years, we have opportunities with these big storm events and need to do everything we can,” said California Department of Water Resources Director Karla Nemeth, addressing water managers, farmers, government officials and others, as part of the Flood-MAR Forum in Sacramento last week. “Our ability to respond to those kinds of intense rain events is becoming increasingly important.”

Football roundup: Trojans triumph in Turlock

Oak Ridge is the lone local football squad still hunting a Sac-Joaquin Section championship.

In Division 6 playoffs, sixth-seeded Union Mine traveled to Sacramento to face third-seeded Bradshaw Christian Friday, Nov. 10. The Diamondbacks were held to a single touchdown as the Pride rallied 41 points, bringing Union Mine's playoff run to an end.

Legacy Health grant aims to educate more nurse practitioners

As part of its continuing commitment to expand and enhance medical care access for residents of Stanislaus and Merced counties, Legacy Health Endowment (LHE) is excited to announce a grant of $250,000 to Livingston Community Health (LCH).  

This grant will help create the Joelle and Robert Triebsch Health Scholar program at California State University, Stanislaus.

Empty the Shelter

The Stanislaus Animal Services Agency is inviting the community to participate in a special "Empty the Shelter" event, sponsored in memory of Kyle MacDonald. All adoption fees for dogs will be waived during this event, taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

November marks one of the busiest times of the year for animals coming into the shelter, and SASA seeks the support of the community to find loving homes for the many dogs awaiting adoption.

Sustainable drinking water on its way

Local dignitaries gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday to officially open the $230 million Stanislaus Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant north of Turlock.

Set on 47 acres near Fox Grove Park, the plant will provide clean, sustainable drinking water from the Tuolumne River for the cities of Turlock and Ceres, while reducing dependence on groundwater.

Over $65K raised for Salvation Army at Kettle Kickoff

It’s that time of year again where the weather cools down, Christmas lights and trees are put on display and silver bells start ringing in front of stores throughout the country.

Tuesday morning marked the official start of bell ringing season for the Salvation Army Turlock Corp. as its 27th annual Kettle Kickoff luncheon at the Grand Oak Banquet Hall and Event Center welcomed over 440 community members.

2,500 pounds of pot seized by sheriff’s deputies serving warrant near school in Modesto

A search warrant served at an illegal pot grow in Modesto on Friday morning found about 900 plants plus processed marijuana, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The search was conducted about 7 a.m. at a residence on the 900 block of Lenore Court, just east of Mark Twain Jr. High School in west Modesto. Thirteen people initially were taken into custody and four firearms were seized, Sgt. Luke Schwartz told The Bee.
