Free public transit rides offered in July

The Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority (StanRTA) and Turlock Transit will offer free rides on all fixed-route, commuter, and ADA Paratransit buses during July as part of a joint free-ride promotion.

The free rides applies to local fixed-route services as well as ACE, BART and Stockton Commuter bus services, The Micro Bus in Merced County, ADA Paratransit, and Medivan, but excludes Turlock Transit’s On-Demand Service.

Pick up some ‘boom, pop and sizzle’ for good causes

One of the longest running fireworks fundraisers in the Turlock area is back for its 23rd year, as the Kiwanis of Greater Turlock is once again teaming up with local children’s organizations to sell scrips for their booth on The Village Corner Shopping Center on E. Canal Drive.

Every year, the club works alongside student organizations from local schools and non-profits to sell the $10 tickets stubs that can be used towards purchases at the fireworks booth. The proceeds of scrip sales are split 50/50 between the Kiwanis club and the student organizations.

Turlock rescue comes to the aid of abandoned dogs

Forty dogs that were abandoned in a Gustine orchard will in a matter of weeks be ready to move into new homes thanks to the efforts of a Turlock-based rescue group and several volunteer groomers called into action.

The dogs, a mix of poodles, cocker spaniels, Doodles, Schmoodles and one Afghan, were abandoned last week out on Eastin Road.

Triple-digit heat to finally hit Modesto this week. How this year compares to some others

A warming trend in Modesto this week is expected to bring the first triple-digit temperatures of the year, according to the National Weather Service. The seven-day forecast says Friday will be sunny and hot, with “a high near 100,” and then Saturday — the first day of July — could see the thermometer hit 101.

According to Modesto Irrigation District weather records, the last time the city was at or above the century mark was Sept. 9, when the high was 102 degrees. That was the end of nine-day string of triple-digit days that reached as high as 113 degrees.

Wrong-way driver who died in Highway 99 crash identified as Turlock man

The wrong-way driver who died in a fiery crash on Highway 99 early Tuesday has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as a Turlock man.

Armando Beltran, 54, was driving a sedan south in the northbound lanes near Lander Avenue when he crashed head-on with a northbound Tesla at 3:17 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Parolee arrested on violation after driving recklessly in front of officer Wednesday night

On Wednesday, June 21st, 2023, at 8:08 pm, a Turlock Police officer near Fast Stop Liquor, 301 W Canal Dr, Turlock, heard sounds of a vehicle driving recklessly, so he began investigating.

The officer then observed a man driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed, so he made a traffic stop on him.

Man arrested after being caught cutting into engine block of stolen vehicle Wednesday morning

On Wednesday, June 21st, 2023, at 9:15 am, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported suspicious vehicle at Pedretti Park, 2400 N Tegner Rd, Turlock.

When officers arrived on scene, they found and contacted several subjects associated with three different vehicles, including a man later identified as Colin Craig, 39, of Turlock.

Stanislaus County Fair brings a bevy of musical entertainment

The Stanislaus County Fair has put together an entertainment lineup that will satisfy the music tastes of multitudes, with rock, country, R&B, and Latin acts set to take the stage during the fair’s run.

The Stanislaus County Fair 2023 concert line up will open with Platinum award winning Country artist Parmalee on July 7. The concert will be hosted by KAT COUNTRY 103.3.

Body found in Tuolumne River in west Modesto. Police are investigating

Modesto police are investigating after a body was found in the Tuolumne River between Neece Drive and Highway 99 in west Modesto.

A fisherman spotted the body near the north shore just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, said Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear.

Two men arrested after stealing makeup from department store Monday afternoon

On Monday, June 19th, 2023, at 2:15 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported shoplifting that had just occurred at Kohl’s, 2751 Countryside Dr, Turlock, after two men had exited the business with a duffle bag full of makeup that they hadn’t paid for.

While officers were responding, they were informed that the men had gotten into a 2007 Toyota Sienna that was leaving the parking lot.
