It’s time to Love Turlock

Large signs with the words “Love Turlock” are once again popping up around town as the annual day of community service will be returning for its 12th year on April 29. The goal of Love Turlock is to inspire the community to love each other through connecting and participating in service projects around town.

“I really believe that Love Turlock can be a host for other things in our city,” said Melanie Youkhana of the Love Turlock leadership team.

Turlock man dies after pickup overturns into an irrigation canal

A 31-year-old man died Friday morning after his Chevrolet pickup overturned into an irrigation canal west of Turlock, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 8:45 a.m. a passing motorist discovered the wreckage on Harding Avenue, a lightly traveled, narrow levy road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Olsen. He said the time of the crash remains under investigation but is believed to have occurred before sunrise.

Two dead, two injured in south Modesto shooting

Two people are dead and two others injured following a shooting on Lassen Avenue on Wednesday night.

Modesto Police responded to a report of multiple people shot in the 1100 block of Lassen Avenue at around 10:34 p.m. and found four people outside suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a press release.

20×20 sinkhole forms in Turlock

 Crews are trying to repair a roadway in Turlock after a sinkhole formed.

Turlock Police Department said the sinkhole was at North Olive Avenue and Monte Vista Avenue and was about 20x20 feet in size.

Stanislaus County to search for records revealing white-only neighborhoods and racism

The grotesque language of racially restrictive covenants still appears on Stanislaus property records during home-buying transactions, even though the restrictions have been illegal for more than 50 years.

The Stanislaus County clerk-recorder’s office will search millions of records for these discriminatory covenants that restricted property ownership in white-only sections and isolated minority families in substandard segregated neighborhoods.

Man shot in orchard near Turlock. Sheriff’s deputies investigating attempted homicide

An attempted homicide Monday night southeast of Turlock is being investigated by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrol deputies were dispatched to the 700 block of South Daubenberger Road shortly before 9 p.m. on an assault with a deadly weapon call. Google Maps shows the block as having one residential property on the west side of the road, and an orchard on the east.

Evacuation warning issued for rural Patterson

 A rising San Joaquin River has prompted emergency officials in Stanislaus County to issue an evacuation warning for rural parts of Patterson and Grayson.

The warning covers areas in the immediate vicinity of the San Joaquin River from Grayson Road to Crows Landing Road.

ACE rail expansion runs late, just as Modesto readies its historic downtown depot

The Altamont Corridor Express expects a two-year delay in its expansion into Stanislaus and Sacramento counties.

The first trains will not run until late 2026 under the latest timeline from ACE management. It attributed the delay in part to a complex review process by Union Pacific Railroad, which runs freight trains on the same tracks.

A spokeswoman for UP said it is working with ACE to ensure that the expansion provides for safe and reliable service.

Turlock police arrest suspect in armed robbery of gas station

Turlock police have arrested a suspect in an armed robbery of a gas station in November. The robbery was at the Chevron on East Glenwood Avenue the night of Nov. 23, according to a Turlock Police Department press release. The suspect threatened an employee with a gun, took cash and ran to a waiting getaway vehicle.
