Something smelly in the foothills and it’s not the smoke

Elk Grove Unified has always had and always will have fine high school and youth football players. But, someone needs to tell me why so many players and their parents think they have to play at one of the Sierra Foothill League schools – or at one of our private schools - in order to make it to the big time?

Before I get to this topic, a big first in Elk Grove-area sports happened Sunday night; former Thundering Herd quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie became the first local to coach a professional football team to a championship.

Man accused of trying to run down officer: Merced PD

MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 23-year-old man was arrested in Merced, police say, on suspicion of trying to run over an officer and then leading law enforcement on an 11-mile pursuit.

According to the Merced Police Department Matthew Tijerina intentionally swerved his Honda Pilot into oncoming traffic and into the path of Officer Alejandro Arias Saturday night.

In Stanislaus, protesters raise voices, banners in solidarity with the people of Iran

Dozens of demonstrators on Sunday waved flags, held signs and shouted demands for democracy and human rights, hoping their voices echo in Washington and from there are carried to the land they love and the rulers they loathe.

Iranian Americans from Stanislaus County and beyond, as well as supporters, gathered in the afternoon in Turlock, at the corner of Monte Vista Avenue and Countryside Drive.

California drug bust shuts down ‘major trafficking operation’ in several counties

 Hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs were seized along with firearms and more than $150,000 in cash after warrants were served in several California counties, according to the Modesto Police Department.

The seizure was made by police with assistance from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, Merced Area Gang and Narcotic Enforcement Team and the DEA, following a months-long investigation.

Stanislaus County transit agencies offering free rides in December

The Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority and the City of Turlock, the two public transit providers in Stanislaus County, announced that all rides on all fixed-route and commuter buses will be free for passengers during the month of December as part of a joint free-ride promotion.

The goal of the free-ride promotion is to reduce the use of single-occupant vehicles in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and countless hours wasted on freeways.

Merced College Set to Double Capacity for Nursing Program Students

The nationwide nursing shortage has been especially acute in California’s Central Valley. Now, Merced College is teaming up with clinical partners to double the number of slots available for students in its nursing program.

The college, which already has a longstanding partnership with Mercy Medical Center in Merced, is resuming a previous partnership with Emanuel Medical Center that will provide even more opportunities for Merced College nursing students to find the clinical training they need to become professional nurses or to advance in their careers.

Another step toward agreement on California’s water | Dan Walters

For at least a decade, off and on, state water managers and local water agencies have pursued the holy grail of a master agreement to improve the environmental health of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by increasing its water flows.

At any given moment, California’s water supply is a zero sum game. Therefore, increasing flows through the Delta to improve habitat for salmon and other species would require local water agencies, particularly those serving farmers, to take less from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and their tributaries.

TID power rates will increase for first time since 2015. Here’s how much and why

Electricity customers in the Turlock Irrigation District will get a rate increase Dec. 1 to cover the rising cost of natural gas, its main power source.

A home will pay $8.05 more a month during winter based on an example from TID assuming 805 kilowatt-hours of consumption. It will be $12 if that home uses 1,200 kilowatt-hours during a summer month, when air-conditioning is in demand.
