Modesto woman arrested for financial elder abuse, grand theft in Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. — Turlock police arrested a Modesto woman Wednesday for financial elder abuse and grand theft after an investigation began Sept. 2.

Catrina Moreno was booked in the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of grand theft, obtaining money by false pretenses, and financial elder abuse.

Turlock father charged with murder of baby confessed to beating, according to testimony

The Turlock father of a two-month old girl who died in April told a detective he repeatedly punched the infant in the head because she wouldn’t stop crying, according to testimony in Stanislaus Superior Court.

Following a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Judge Linda McFadden concluded there was enough evidence for Joseph Alexander Rendon, 24, to stand trial on the charges of murder and child abuse causing death.

Turlock has $15 million for affordable housing. Why isn’t the city spending the money?

Turlock needs more housing. In 2015, as part of a state-mandated process, the city set out to build 3,618 units by the end of 2023 to keep up with demand. Nearly 40% of those new units were meant to be affordable.

But Turlock has struggled to meet those affordable housing goals for years, and now the City Council is divided on how to solve the problem.

Family kidnapped at gunpoint in Merced County, including 8-month-old baby and parents

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office on Monday night issued a plea to the public after an 8-month-old baby, her father, mother, and an uncle were kidnapped from their business at gunpoint.

Taken were Aroohi Dheri, the baby; her mother, Jasleen Kaur, 27; her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36; and the uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39.

Gasoline soars to about $6 per gallon in Stanislaus County. Where to buy the cheapest gas?

Gasoline prices are hovering around $6 per gallon in the Modesto area, as the cost has risen more than 90 cents since a month ago, according to GasBuddy.

The average for Modesto was $5.97 per gallon Monday after the price surged 55.6 cents in the past week.

Suspect arrested in fatal shooting near Modesto Airport

A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of 38-year-old Modesto resident Matthew McDonough on Thursday, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday.

Suspect Matthew Douglas Cook, 39 and from Modesto, was located by detectives with the Special Investigations Unit on Friday afternoon outside a home near the intersection of Coffee Road and East Coolidge Avenue.
