California’s Portuguese community keeps bullfighting alive without bloodshed

in Community

TURLOCK, California — Just like any other Portuguese bullfight, the elegant rider deftly guides his horse around the charging bull’s horns, before bending down to plant a bandarilha in its spine.

Except that no blood is spilled — the small spear is velcro-padded, and sticks to a cushion attached to the bull’s back — and most of the spectators’ cheers are in English.

The scene takes place in Turlock, a small town in the heart of rural California, where tens of thousands of Portuguese-Americans have lived for decades, keeping the traditions of their ancestral homeland alive, not least bullfighting.

But due to Californian law, there can be no bloodshed.

“The first time I came here in California, 15 years ago, it was like ‘woah, amazing’ because they have everything like Portugal,” said Joao Soller Garcia, a “cavaleiro” or horse rider, who travelled from Lisbon to take part in the bullfight.

“Go to a bullfight in Portugal and it’s the same thing,” he said shortly before entering the arena to be applauded by some 4,000 spectators.

The majority of the crowd are of Portuguese descent — mainly immigrants from the Azores Islands, who began to settle this agricultural area in the early 20th century.

The community has been growing ever since, with its own newspapers, radio stations and associations.

These new national businesses opened, others coming soon in Turlock — and one closes

in business/Community

We’re halfway through the year and Turlock retailers already have had a bustling 2022.

Two companies have opened in new locations in the city, three construction projects are underway nearby and, unfortunately, one long-term business is calling it quits.

First, a Modesto-born brand has found a new home in Turlock. 5.11 Tactical, the military and law enforcement-focused apparel company founded by Modesto entrepreneur Dan Costa, opened a new store in Monte Vista Crossings earlier this year. The store, which fills the former Dress Barn space, has been operating in the popular shopping center since March.

The new site sells men’s and women’s outdoor and tactical clothing. The location is the company’s only corporate retail store in Stanislaus County, despite the brand’s origins in Modesto. Costa famously started 5.11 in 1999 with a single pair of pants, and sold the $300 million company in 2007.

While Modesto has stores, like Crescent Supply and Work World, that carry a selection of 5.11 products, there isn’t an official corporate store in the city. 5.11 has a factory store in Manteca. The Monte Vista Crossings 5.11 store at 3005 Countryside Drive is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 209-580-0640.

Another new hotel is headed for Turlock. What’s planned for extended stay destination

in Community/News

Turlock’s hospitality just keeps growing.

A new hotel is under development in the city, bringing with it close to 100 new rooms just off Highway 99. The new TownePlace Suites by Marriott would be a four-story extended stay hotel west of downtown Turlock on North Tully Road.

Sacramento-based BM5 Hospitality LLC is behind the development, which would sit directly north of the existing Comfort Suites on Tully Road. The hotel would be constructed on a vacant 2-acre dirt lot that is currently being used largely for semi-trailer parking.

Representatives from BM5 Hospitality LLC did not return a request for comment on the project before the publication deadline.

Why July 5 is California’s dirtiest day of the year

in Around California/Community/Events

Backyard barbecues abound and downtown fireworks celebrations draw crowds. But Independence Day, more than any other holiday in California, is all about going to the beach. As an environmental activist with the Surfrider Foundation, this delights me; I believe in not only protecting the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, but also in making sure people can enjoy them. The Fourth of July offers people from all over California the time to make the most of a long summer day. Survey San Francisco’s Ocean Beach on July 4 and you’re likely to see a wide range of people from across the Bay Area, unified by the joy that a day at the beach can bring.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for that pretty picture to inevitably degrade into a far less pleasant one.

While the Fourth of July brings people together for fun and celebration, the “Fifth of July” is more often than not the dirtiest beach day of the year across California and the country. The dramatic holiday influx of beach visitors leave behind a huge amount of trash.

This is notable because plenty of litter accumulates on a regular day.

New $60 million health services, public health center coming for Stanislaus County

in Community

In the last five years or so, it looked like Stanislaus County would be moving its Health Services Agency away from its longtime home at 830 Scenic Drive.

But county leaders have concluded the best place for building a 55,000-square-foot health services administrative center is the old county hospital site on Scenic Drive.

Early this week, the county Board of Supervisors approved moving forward with demolition of dilapidated buildings at the Scenic campus — a job that could cost $10.3 million by itself.

The county plan calls for constructing the new building on Scenic for health services administration, support staff and public health programs.

The estimated project cost is between $56.9 million and $69.3 million when the demolition costs are included.

California restaurant helps families, veterans with free meals: ‘Small businesses being forgotten about’

in Community/Food

One Southern California restaurant is helping families and veterans in the local community by offering free food as Americans battle rampant inflation.

"Big Parm" owner Chef Andrew Gruel joined "Fox & Friends First" Wednesday to discuss his initiative to help those in need and the challenges he faces as a small business owner.

"Food is the great unifier," Gruel told co-host Carley Shimkus. "I saw throughout the pandemic that people were struggling. People were losing their jobs. People were losing their livelihood."

Wine and liquor bottles might soon have deposits. A great amount comes from Modesto

in Community/Environment

California would add wine and liquor bottles to its deposit program under a bill moving through the Legislature.

Consumers would get a dime at recycling centers for a typical bottle from wineries in Modesto and beyond.

The authors hope to boost the current 30% recycling rate for the 500 million or so wine and spirits bottles produced in the state each year.
