Stimulus checks for gas? Here’s what could be coming your way.

Americans already faced searing inflation when gas prices surged to an all-time high earlier this month. Now, some lawmakers want the federal government to offer stimulus payments or rebate checks to help reduce the pain at the pump.

Families with two children could get as much $300 per month as long as the nation's average gas price exceeds $4 a gallon, according to one new bill proposed by Reps. Mike Thompson of California, John Larson of Connecticut and Lauren Underwood of Illinois. All three lawmakers are Democrats.

And on Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he's proposing to send direct payments of $400 per vehicle to state residents, with a cap of two vehicles. Pending approval from California lawmakers, the checks could arrive as soon as July, the statement said. Drivers in California face some of the highest gas prices in the nation, with the state average at $5.87 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA.

Eligible households may get up to 18 months of assistance to cover rent debt accrued during the pandemic.

As California slowly exits the COVID-19 pandemic, Stanislaus County is targeting collaboration with its nine incorporated cities to address long-term economic development, job creation and the housing crisis. 

Jody Hayes, the Chief Executive Officer for Stanislaus County, continued his campaign to each of the county’s city councils Tuesday night as he addressed the Turlock City Council about developing strategies for job creation and housing. 

“Basic concept that every member of our community can work a normal occupation in Stanislaus County and afford to live in a safe neighborhood,” Hayes said. “That’s what it really all comes down to. That’s the fabric of any great community, and that’s what we’re trying to make sure that we lend our support to and working collaboratively with everyone we can here in our community.”

New program would have electric cars power homes in California

Auto giant General Motors announced a pilot program Tuesday in partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric company that would allow electric cars to be used to power homes in PG&E’s service area.

In a news release announcing the partnership, the companies said the two will work together to hopefully test the first vehicle-to-home capable electric vehicle and charger by summer 2022. The companies said the goal is to open the program to larger customer trials by the end of 2022, The Detroit Free Press reported.

Peptoc, a free hotline created by the students at West Side Elementary in Healdsburg, California, offers words of encouragement and pep talks recorded by children, NPR reported.

Calling 707-998-8410 triggers an automated menu offering options: “If you are feeling mad, frustrated or nervous, press 1. If you need words of encouragement or life advice, press 2. If you need a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3.”

Amazon partners with Modesto JC, Stanislaus State to pay tuition for Valley employees

Amazon is partnering with the largest higher education institutions in Stanislaus County to provide free tuition to the online retailer’s hourly employees in the region.

Turlock’s California State University, Stanislaus, and Modesto Junior College are part of the company’s Career Choice program, which will pay full tuition at associated institutions for hourly Amazon employees. Across the Central Valley, Amazon also is partnering with California State University, Fresno, Clovis Community College and Sacramento City College.

The program is open to full-time Amazon employees, as well as part-time employees (who receive half, but not full tuition). The e-commerce giant will pay tuition and fees for eligible employees, and partner institutions pay nothing to be part of the program.

Almond blossoms are a common sight in the Central Valley come February, but recent freezing temperatures could jeopardize this year’s bloom — and, subsequently, the upcoming almond crop. 

Freezing temperatures are of the most concern during the bloom period. During the bloom, and especially right after the petal fall, is the most vital period of time for the developing nut. Even just a short, 30-minute exposure to freezing temperatures can cause measurable damage to a crop. 

There were eight days in February where Turlock and surrounding towns experienced low temperatures of below 32 degrees, causing significant concerns for local farmers. Temperatures locally will drop to below freezing again this weekend.

Modesto is among the country’s least affordable cities in which to live, a new study shows.

According to a 2022 study from GoodHire, a background screening software company in Redwood City, Modesto ranks sixth among the least affordable cities in the country, one spot ahead of the New York City metropolitan area.

Leading the ranking for least affordable cities is Los Angeles, followed by Hartford, Connecticut; Corpus Christi, Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Bakersfield.

Why is Modesto councilman advocating downtown as home for roller skating rink?

Modesto Councilman Chris Ricci says he has an easy and relatively inexpensive way to draw more people downtown: The city could make it the home of a permanent outdoor roller skating rink.

He said the city could consider converting part of the parking lot at Modesto Centre Plaza for the rink. Part of the parking lot at the Modesto Library or other downtown parking lots also could be contenders, Ricci said.

“Skating creates community, and it’s a spectator sport,” the councilman said. “Ideally, it would be similar to the ice skating rink” that operates seasonally in the Centre Plaza parking lot and draws thousands to downtown over the holidays.
