Local basketball teams await playoff seeding after strong regular seasons

Although they are crosstown rivals, the girls basketball programs of Turlock High and Pitman High must stand beside each other atop the Central California Athletic League standings and share the league championship after they each finished their regular seasons with 8-2 records. There won’t be any bragging rights on the side, either, as they split head-to-head matchups 1-1.

For the Bulldogs, it is their second consecutive 8-2 season, though it’s their first league title since the 2018-2019 campaign. It’s also their first league title under head coach Erica Hernandez. Pitman head coach Parmine Randhawa is celebrating the same milestone.

Ceres man jailed in child sex allegations from a decade ago. He is being held on $1.75M bail

Ripon police arrested a Ceres man Tuesday morning on suspicion of committing sex crimes against children.

The man is being held on $1.75 million bail. Police took Derek William Young, 41, into custody Tuesday morning in a parking lot at the Kaiser Permanente Modesto Medical Center.

Young identified himself as a Ceres resident and his occupation as a patient care tech for Kaiser, according to a document obtained by The Bee. A Kaiser spokesman confirmed Young is an employee.

Police: 2 men caught with more than 400 pieces of stolen mail in Turlock

A man on probation for theft and another man wanted for theft were arrested in Turlock after being caught with over 400 pieces of stolen mail, police said.

In a news release, the Turlock Police Department said an officer responding to a reported mailbox theft at the Park Knolls apartments Tuesday morning spotted a car matching a description that came in.

Two Arrested and 400 Stolen Mailpieces Recovered After Pursuit

At about 8:47am Tuesday, Turlock Police responded to a larceny from a mailbox that had just occurred at Park Knolls Apartments in the 1100 block of Pedras Rd.

The caller reported that the suspect vehicle was a silver Mercedes-Benz driven by a young man.

Officer Marquez arrived in the area and located a matching vehicle near W. Monte Vista Avenue and N. Walnut Road. He attempted to make a traffic stop on it, but it took off from him and a pursuit ensued.

Man With Battery Warrant Arrested After Resisting Officers

At about 3:28am Sunday, Turlock Police responded to a disturbance in progress at The Palms Apartments in the 1100 block of Pedras Road.

Two different callers reported hearing a woman screaming and a child crying near the A building.

Officers arrived on scene and contacted a couple. The male half had made his way across the street, while the female half was still at the apartment complex.

Officers arrested four people in Turlock suspected of stealing more than $10,000 worth of retail goods.

A Facebook post said the city Police Department recovered the property during a joint operation with the California Highway Patrol on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Stanislaus County human trafficking operation arrests 77 people, Sheriff’s Office says

A human trafficking operation conducted by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrests of 77 people throughout a six-day effort, the office announced Wednesday.

The operation, part of a statewide effort called “Operation Reclaim and Rebuild,” raided four massage parlors: two in Modesto, one in Ceres and another in Turlock. Evidence collected during the raids was used as a basis to search further locations, according to the Sheriff’s Office’s statement.

An arrest was made on Tuesday in a fatal November hit-and-run that happened in Turlock, police announced.

Jose Gutierrez-Cruz was arrested near the intersection of Fulkerth and Tully roads during an investigation done by Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

Rough winds ahead

Did you enjoy the spring-like weather over the past couple of days? Hope so, because it’s going to look a lot like winter again as not one but two atmospheric rivers are expected to broadside California in the coming week.

Monday reached a high of 73 degrees — two degrees off the all-time high for the month of January in Turlock — and Tuesday topped out at 71 degrees.

Discounts for a good cause at the Redemption Global Wholesale Outlet

The racks and shelves at the former home of the iconic Bilson’s Sports Shop at 201 Lander Ave. in Turlock are once again full thanks to a non-profit organization and its new overstock department store.

Redemption Global was founded just over a year ago by Jennifer Sweet and her family, with the mission of helping organizations provide relief and assistance to folks in need. The store raises funds for different projects, which includes partnerships with Gateway Community Church in Merced’s child care program as well as adopting families at the Haven’s Women’s Center.
