Turlock’s new Amazon facility pushes back opening. How to get its hiring notices first

As work continues on the new Amazon fulfillment center coming to Turlock, the online retail giant has pushed back the facility’s opening.

Construction on the new million-square-foot warehouse continues as the e-commerce retailer has moved its planned opening from “mid-2022” to September 2022, according to company spokesperson Natalie Banke. Hiring for the expected 1,000 new jobs expected to staff the facility hasn’t started yet, but should in coming months.

Word about a possible Amazon fulfillment center coming to Turlock first began circulating in April 2021. By August of that year, with construction already underway, the online shopping behemoth finally confirmed the news and pending jobs coming to the Central Valley.

McDonald’s aims to recruit a whole lot of workers through its Golden Arches by hosting another drive-up hiring event, this one in Southern California, where labor shortages are especially challenging.

The fast-food giant’s third Drive-Up Hiring Day event will be held on Tuesday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to an announcement this week on the SoCal MCD website. Interested candidates can drive up to more than 200 Southern California McDonald’s locations and get an interview on the spot, with no prior scheduling or interview request required. Applicants can either stay in their vehicles or sit in the designated interview areas.

California state workers can cash out accrued leave. Here’s how much you can take home

Some California state employees don’t have to wait until retirement to cash out their accrued vacation time.

The California Department of Human Resources released its updated policy this week, reminding certain state workers they can get an annual cash payment for unused vacation time and paid leave, via the Leave Buy-Back Program.

The department has authorized this program in the past for California state employees, allowing most union and non-union members, such as managers and supervisors, to trade up to 80 hours of accrued leave for money.

California Could Become The First State To Have a 4-Day Work Week — Here’s What to Know

California could become the first state in the U.S. to have a mandated four-day workweek after the state legislators introduced a bill that would shorten the current workweek from 40 hours to 32.

The proposal, Assembly Bill 2932, would require any employer with more than 500 workers to shorten required hours and mandate overtime pay for any hours worked over 32. Currently, the federally recognized workweek is 40 hours, with overtime earned for hours worked in excess of 40. Introduced by Los Angeles County Representative Cristina Garcia, the legislation also states that employers may not decrease workers’ pay rates in response to the shortened workweek.

The unemployment rate remained unchanged in October, as dips in some sectors were offset by gains in other sectors, according to the latest data from the Employment Development Department.

Stanislaus County had an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent in October, unchanged from the revised rate in September. The rate was below the year-ago estimate of 9.4 percent.

Riverbank came in with a 5.1 percent unemployment rate for October, compared to the 9.3 percent in Oakdale and a 2.1 percent rate recorded for East Oakdale.

Unemployment continues to fall in Stanislaus

The unemployment rate continued to drop in Stanislaus County, according to the latest numbers from the Employment Development Department.

Stanislaus County had an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent in September, down from a revised rate of 8 percent in August. The rate is below the year-ago estimate of 10.3 percent.
