Carnegie Art Showcase To Open In July

From more than 200 entries, jurors have selected 88 works — including art from 10 Merced County artists — that will be on display in the annual Carnegie Art Showcase exhibition taking place this summer at the Carnegie Arts Center in Downtown Turlock.

The juried exhibition is a celebration of artistic excellence, awarding a total of $2,350 in prize money.

The show will be on view in the CAC’s Ferrari Gallery from July 5 through Sept. 3, and a free public reception will take place on Friday, July 8, from 6-8 p.m.

It all started with Marilyn Monroe.

Well, it actually started in the late 1800s when Italian immigrants brought a strange Sicilian plant with spiky edible buds with them to California’s Central Coast. But as stories go, Marilyn Monroe isn’t a bad place to start.

In 1948, a still not-that-famous Monroe traveled to Monterey Bay to do a paid appearance at a jewelry store, according to Carmel Magazine, and ended up agreeing to be crowned California’s Artichoke Queen.

Lynyrd Skynyrd set to return to California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES, Calif. – Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to return to Paso Robles to play at the California Mid-State Fair on July 26.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's career has spanned more than 40 years, cataloging more than 60 albums with more than 30 million units sold, according to fair officials.

Canceled since COVID, popular music fest returns to Modesto; more events planned for May

Festivals and events will spring up across the Modesto area in May.

Among them will be the return of the popular Modesto Porchfest, which has not been held since the pandemic hit.

During Porchfest, local bands perform outside at host neighborhood homes while people gather to listen, many roaming on foot or by bike.

And just before May begins, there’s another festival set for taco lovers.

Here’s a look at just some of the larger events happening in the Modesto and Mother Lode regions.

‘Wild Ride’ returns to Murphys

Mr. Frog’s Wild Ride will once again see cyclists taking scenic rides around the town of Murphys on May 7.

This year’s event features three all-new bicycle rides that will take participants through some of the most beautiful countryside in Northern California at one of the most beautiful times of the year. Late rains have kept the Sierra Foothills green and wildflowers are blooming; the weather is expected to be comfortable and cloudy with a slight chance of rain. After the ride, there will be a party in the park with barbecue prepared by Chef Laura Lowell and a crew of Feeney Park volunteers, all backed by the music of guitarist Nicholas Lefler.

Celebration of Baja California wine and shellfish coming to California

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Mexican Consulate in San Diego is bringing a little bit of Baja California’s Guadalupe Valley north of the border, specifically its world-renowned wines and shellfish.

The Baja Wine & Shellfish Fest is geared toward Americans from Southern California who have yet to venture to the Guadalupe Valley just south of Tijuana near the border.

Portuguese Fest returns to Turlock fairgrounds

All things Portuguese will be celebrated this weekend at the third annual San Joaquin Valley Portuguese Festival being held at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.

“The celebration is open to everyone to come discover the culture and heritage of the Portuguese people and honor their contributions to the San Joaquin Valley and the state of California,” said Julio Valadez of the Carlos Vieira Foundation, one of the event’s sponsors. “This family-friendly event will showcase traditional Portuguese dancing, music and cuisine.”

Local volunteers to host special prom night for Turlock youth

A group of volunteers is looking to provide local students who have special needs with an opportunity to experience their very own prom night, specifically tailored to their needs.

Prom with a Purpose: A Special Needs Prom will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 2 at the Calvary Church gymnasium in Turlock. Attendees and their registered guests will be treated to a meal, a live DJ, a photo booth, and can have professional photos taken.

The event is free for local special needs teens and young adults and their guests. Guests may include parents, legal guardians, or other caretakers for the student that may be necessary. To further accommodate participating students, a multi-sensory safe room will be available at the venue for those who may become overwhelmed by noise, lights, crowds or other occurrences. There will also be medical and security personnel on-site.

Downtown scavenger hunt promises ‘pot of gold’

St. Patrick’s Day fun is on the way for Turlockers in need of some luck, courtesy of a downtown scavenger hunt with prizes you’d be sure to find at the end of a rainbow. 

Over 20 downtown businesses have come together for the Pot of Gold Scavenger Hunt — a three-day event featuring more than one way to win. Jennifer Brannon, owner of Lightly Used Books, said the idea for a scavenger hunt came during a monthly meeting between downtown businesses owners.

“We’ve been trying to discuss what we can do to help bring that vibrancy back into our downtown community,” Brannon said. “We want to remind people that we’re here, and we thought a St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt would be a fun way to get people to come do something as a community again.”
