PARADE RETURNS DOWNTOWN

The Turlock Downtown Christmas Parade returned to Main Street on Friday night with scenes from “Christmas in Toyland,” the parade theme for the night. After being cancelled last year due to COVID, hundreds lined Turlock’s downtown streets to take in the spectacle of lights, with appearances from Santa Claus, the Grinch and even a dancing horse or two.

‘Pink Friday’ coming to downtown Turlock

Most shopping enthusiasts are familiar with the long-running retail holiday known as Black Friday, but this year a group of downtown businesses are hoping Turlockers will embrace a new event featuring smalltown sales and a pop of color.

Pink Friday is the antithesis of its predecessor and encourages customers to shop local before Thanksgiving, taking place exactly one week before the big-box extravaganza known as Black Friday. It’s a fairly new endeavor and reminds the community to shop at its small boutiques first before heading to Target and Walmart in the days that follow.

HONORING TURLOCK’S HEROES

The City of Turlock’s Veterans Day celebration took place at a new location this year, but support for those who have served was at an all-time high. 

U.S. military members past and present were honored during a special ceremony at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex on Thursday morning, where high school performers, local dignitaries and others from throughout the community gathered to say “thank you” to service members for their sacrifice.

Turlock to honor veterans with annual ceremony

The City of Turlock will acknowledge and celebrate veterans on Thursday as part of its annual ceremony, but this year the longtime event moves to a new location to allow even more participants.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, community members, veterans and local dignitaries will gather at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex for a morning of music and patriotism. Historically, the City has held the ceremony in downtown’s Central Park by the cannon; however, staff felt that this year, a larger venue with plenty of outdoor space would allow as many attendees as possible.

NO TRICKS, JUST TREATS

Ghouls, goblins and a princess or two traveled from business to business on Main Street this past Saturday as the annual Downtown Trick-Or-Treat event took place. The collaboration between over 40 downtown businesses allowed kids like Johanna the ghost to collect candy while Charlie and Beatrice, a pair of cow wranglers, had passers-by stopping in their tracks to say, “Aw!” as they shopped at the Turlock Certified Farmers Market.

Turlock announces Christmas Parade plans. How are viewing areas a COVID-19 measure?

Turlock plans to resume its Downtown Christmas Parade tradition on Dec. 3, the city announced Thursday, with more COVID-19 safety recommendations than requirements.

The city will not verify COVID-19 vaccination status or negative test results for attendees, which California public health recommends but does not require for such events, said Allison Van Guilder, director of the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Department.

Downtown Turlock prepares for holiday events

The streets of downtown Turlock will soon be busy with holiday fun as business owners and the community prepare for tricks, treats and plenty of Christmas cheer thanks to the return of several beloved events. 

A sense of normalcy will return to Main Street in the coming weeks as the Christmas Parade and Festival of Lights make triumphant returns after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic. This year, however, both celebrations will look a bit different than community members are used to.

Turlock High takes over downtown to celebrate homecoming

The only undefeated football team in Turlock High history was in attendance as the Bulldogs celebrated their 2021 homecoming parade. The 1970-1971 team excited the crowd as floats took over a shut down Main Street Friday afternoon.

“I want to thank everyone for coming and supporting our team on this festive day. Hopefully the team has their head game, and they can out victorious. Victory’s a sweet a thing,” said former Turlock High football player David Yonan.

Gospel Mission’s ‘Top Chef’ fundraiser returns

Turlock residents are invited to taste — and critique — some of the best cuisine their favorite local food trucks have to offer, and all for a good cause. 

Turlock Gospel Mission’s second annual Turlock Top Chef competition is set to be held later this month, bringing back a new tradition which started successfully in 2019, but was put on halt last year due to the pandemic. This time, instead of four of the city’s top culinary masters putting their knives to the test, four of the area’s most popular food trucks will face off while feeding the masses.

EG beer and wine showcase coming to Old Town

Uncorked & Uncapped, a festival that spotlights Elk Grove’s breweries and wineries, will debut in Old Town Elk Grove on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The VIP early admission passes are sold out, but general admission and designated driver tickets will continue to be sold through Sept. 22.

On tap are all of Elk Grove’s five breweries as well as five local wineries. The Turlock-based Dust Bowl Brewing Company will also serve samples of their ales at the festival. They plan to open a 3,000-square foot taproom on Railroad Street, next to the Old Town Plaza, later this fall.
