Calling all small business owners and entrepreneurs: Turlock prepares for first funding expo

Small business owners and entrepreneurs in Turlock will have an opportunity to learn more about funding opportunities at the City of Turlock’s first ever Small Business Funding Expo on Jan. 18.

The event, which is a collaborative effort between the City of Turlock, Valley Sierra Small Business Development Center, Central Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Stanislaus Equity Partners, hopes to connect members of the public with experts and resources needed to successfully fund or kickstart their endeavors.

Modesto synagogue and chabad celebrate Hanukkah with public menorah lightings

Modesto’s Congregation Beth Shalom celebrated the third night of Hanukkah with a public menorah lighting outside the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto on Tuesday. Public lightings by CBS will continue through the region and end on the 25th.

Modesto-area homeless count needs 250 volunteers to help with next one in late January

Organizers of the annual count of homeless people in Stanislaus County and its nine cities are looking for 250 volunteers to help with the latest effort, which takes place Jan. 26.

Volunteers will undergo training and work with members of the county’s homeless outreach and engagement team in having homeless people complete surveys. Volunteers also will hand care packages to the people they survey.

Local bikers unite to bring holiday joy

The doors of the Turlock Salvation Army were wide open on Friday as dozens of local motorcycle riders rolled up with bags of toys and other gifts. For the third year, Hell’s Angels and the United Motorcycle Clubs joined forced to sponsor local families, hoping to bring holiday cheer to those who are less fortunate.

Turlock Sports Park prepares for big weekend

One of the biggest weekends on the calendar for the Turlock Sports Park is finally here. On Saturday, the local organization will be hosting two highly anticipated events: Their biannual flag football championships and a youth soccer camp with Turlock native and current DC United defender Hayden Sargis.

Both events will be taking place at the same time at the Turlock Sports Park facilities at 801 N. Soderquist Rd.

City of Turlock’s Leaf Pickup Program

The City of Turlock’s Leaf Pickup Program began on Nov. 1 and will run through Feb. 3. Turlock residents are encouraged to use their green, organic waste cart provided by Turlock Scavenger for leaves and garden refuse.  Any remaining leaves that will not fit into the green cart may be placed in the street for collection.

Impact Prints encourages ‘little artists’ to share their love of Turlock

Turlock-based digital printing company, Impact Prints, is encouraging local children ages 3 to 8 years old to submit drawings showcasing their favorite place in Turlock as part of their first-ever Little Artists competition. Participants will have an opportunity to win several prizes, including iPads, art kits and shirts.

Rob Kho and his wife, Maya, are the owners and founders of Impact Prints. Rob explained that he came up with the idea to hold the contest after seeing a decline in children participating in arts and crafts.

Santa set to roll through Turlock

Santa Claus will once again be coming to town during the leadup to Christmas as he is joining forces with Turlock Fire Incorporated to bring back the popular Santa Firetruck. Beginning Saturday, the Santa Firetruck will make the rounds into Turlock neighborhoods, bringing holiday joy to residents.

Turlock Fire Capt. Frank Saldivar has overseen the Santa Firetruck program since he joined Turlock Fire over 30 years ago. He explained that the cis run and funded entirely through firefighters, and that it’s something that everyone looks forward to.

Honor Flight invites Gold Star families to nation’s capital

The invitation was too good to pass up.

Diana and Salvador Pleitez of Fallon received an invitation to travel on an Honor Flight Nevada trip earlier this month to Washington, D.C. with other Gold Star families and Vietnam War veterans. They felt the camaraderie and talking to like-minded Gold Star families would also be therapeutic for the four-day trip.
