Downtown Modesto gets sweeter. Owners of popular restaurant to open next-door bakery

They met in a bakeshop and now they’re going to own one.

Husband-and-wife team Hank and Ashley Olson have come a long way since they met at their culinary school bakeshop. Now, a dozen years, four children, one food truck and a restaurant later, they’re about to accomplish their shared culinary dreams together.

Seven years ago, they started humbly, opening the Food Fix Truck painted bright orange in what would become their signature color. The truck became a hit on Modesto streets, attracted celebrity endorsements with visits from famous TV chefs like Alton Brown and even was featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

Four years later, the Olsons took the next step, a big one, and opened Food Fix Butcher & Baker on 11th Street in the heart of downtown Modesto. The brick-and-mortar restaurant, ironically built in the hull of a failed bakery-restaurant combo, was another labor of love the two embarked on together.

Selland’s Market-Cafe alum with ‘Top Chef’ ties launches new pizzeria in Folsom

A chef with local and Southern California ties hope people will “Flock” to his new pizzeria in Folsom.

Jordan Davis’ new restaurant, Flock, opened Feb. 4 at 185 Placerville Rd., Suite 150 just off Highway 50. It marks a return to the region for Davis, who oversaw the El Dorado Hills Selland’s Market-Cafe’s gourmet market and catering programs in the early 2010s before leading highly-regarded restaurants in his native Southern California.

TURLOCK (CBS13) — “Leave no person hungry,” is the mission of a group of teens in Turlock who set out to end hunger in their city.

A successful kitchen moves smoothly, like a dance, and that’s exactly what this group has created at their kitchen in Turlock.

A community of high schoolers and chefs alike, all worked together to create an environment that focuses on giving back.

Wish Book: Santa Cruz farm provides jobs to the homeless, food for the community

Brenda Deckman had lots of jobs in her life. Nurse’s aide. Manager of a Subway sandwich shop. Home health care aide. Laundromat worker.

But after a turbulent marriage that ended with her losing custody of her 5-year-old son, she fell into a deep depression, spiraled downward and ended up homeless, living in a tent in the Pogonip Open Space Preserve, a 640-acre wooded park on the northern edge of Santa Cruz.

She had no car. No bike. Not even one photo of her son. Adrift, aimless and lacking self-worth, she survived on food stamps, panhandled and bathed in a creek.

Gospel Mission’s ‘Top Chef’ fundraiser returns

Turlock residents are invited to taste — and critique — some of the best cuisine their favorite local food trucks have to offer, and all for a good cause. 

Turlock Gospel Mission’s second annual Turlock Top Chef competition is set to be held later this month, bringing back a new tradition which started successfully in 2019, but was put on halt last year due to the pandemic. This time, instead of four of the city’s top culinary masters putting their knives to the test, four of the area’s most popular food trucks will face off while feeding the masses.

California raw milk dairyman is nonplussed about recall and quarantine

Valley Milk Simply Bottled is the California raw milk that’s been quarantined and ordered recalled four times since 2019, most recently last week.

The Modesto Bee just paid a visit to the dairy, which is located six miles west of the City of Modesto. The local dairy newspaper reports finding dairyman Joe Bento “unfazed.”  

 “Even though we’re going through stuff like this, I still enjoy it,” Bento told the Bee.

When he says “stuff like this, “ Bento means the recent report by the California Department of Health about illegal levels of Campylobacter jejuni found by the state’s Department of Food and Agriculture in raw cow milk produced and bottled by his company.

‘The David in the David & Goliath match’ | Turlock nonprofit in nail-biting race for $100,000 grant

TURLOCK, Calif. — A nonprofit children’s ministry in Turlock is throwing down with some heavyweight contenders in a race for a $100,000 grant.

“We’re the underdog here,” said Jolynn DiGrazia, director for Westside Ministries. “We’re the David in the David & Goliath match.”

To be specific, that match is a contest from Kubtoa Tractor Corporation. It’s a national contest that’s part of the company’s Hometown Proud Grant Program. The winner in the contest is decided by votes. They chose five organizations, and Westside Ministries has a real chance of taking the top spot and taking home $100,000 for the Westside Food Literacy Program.

WIC participants receive increase in benefits

Beginning this month, participants of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will see a temporary increase to their benefits for the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

This benefit, provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, provides families with a temporary increase in their monthly WIC fruits and vegetables benefit to $35 to provide additional relief during COVID‐19. Currently, children ages one to five receive $9 per month, and, pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women receive $11 per month. The increase takes effect June 1 and is expected to last until September 2021.

Restaurants on the move in Turlock Town Center

More residents than ever are flocking to the Turlock Town Center for their shopping and dining needs thanks to its revitalization in recent years, and additional changes are on the way as some well-known businesses prepare to move into the growing retail hub. 

Although the grand opening of the center’s new anchor tenant, Smart & Final Extra! last summer seemingly marked the completion of a years-long effort to breathe new life into the shopping space, a restaurant shakeup is set to take place in the coming months as Mundo’s Latin Grill moves locations and others set up shop in the center as well.
