California does not track groundwater banking—but projects tapping flood flows show promise

The state does not have a mechanism for tracking the amount of floodwater that water managers and landowners are diverting to groundwater recharge projects. But the looming threat of groundwater regulations has propelled a new race to grab more water in the wet years to prepare for the dry years.

Innovative new collaborations are showing both promise and the regulatory hurdles ahead in scaling up efforts to tap into this natural water supply storage.

Turlock, Calif., Installs License Plate Cameras to Curb Crime

(TNS) — Since well before back-to-back fatal shootings in downtown Turlock, plans have been in motion to employ technology to help solve crime in the city.

Chief Jason Hedden said the city by March will install license plate reader cameras (LPRs) at six intersections. The cameras not only record activity at the intersections but scan license plates to identify stolen or wanted vehicles that travel through them and instantaneously send alerts to officers.

Related Santa Clara Developer To Appeal Decision Over Wages

A development firm worth $60 billion intends to challenge a state decision that it must pay prevailing wages to workers on its massive project planned for Santa Clara.

The $8 billion Related Santa Clara project, from New York City-based firm The Related Companies, benefits from public subsidies granted by the city.

Ceres native Matt Cranford resigns as County Fair CEO for State Fair position

After more than seven years serving as CEO of the Stanislaus County Fair, Matt Cranford is leaving his position to oversee facility operations at California Exposition and State Fair. As the Stan County Fair searches for a permanent replacement, concessions manager Kim Williams will serve as interim CEO.

Cranford said that the opportunities at the state level came fast, and that it was a unique opportunity that he felt couldn’t be turned down.

Election results are in. Who’s representing San Joaquin County, Stockton Unified?

The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters has finished counting ballots and official election results are in. 

The 2022 general election drew 46.5% voter turnout from San Joaquin County’s 385,679 registered voters. Most chose to vote by mail, with just 16,449 people ― 4% ― choosing to vote in-person at a polling place.

No red tidal wave here in Stanislaus County elections. But maybe a ripple

It’s a mixed bag for both sides here in Stanislaus County, early election returns suggest.

If the names Brian Dahle, Angela Jacobs, Rob Bernosky, Lanhee Chen, Jack Guerrero, Nathan Hochman and Robert Howell don’t sound terribly familiar to you, it’s because they aren’t. But most Stanislaus voters preferred these Republicans running for governor and other statewide offices over those who actually won.

Turlock’s Mayor Race: 2022 Election Results

TURLOCK, Calif. — Two candidates have squared off over the past several months in an effort to lead the city of Turlock.

The candidates once sat beside each other on the City Council. Current Mayor Amy Bublak is looking for another four years representing the city of Turlock, but former Turlock Councilman Gil Esquer is vying to fill that role himself.
