California man who fatally shot mountain lion gets 30 days in jail, 240 hours of community service

The Southern California man charged with shooting and killing a protected mountain lion this summer has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and was ordered to serve 240 hours of community service in an animal shelter after pleading guilty, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Alfredo Gonzalez, 60, of Simi Valley, Calif., will have to serve the community service at a Los Angeles County animal shelter, Senior Deputy District Attorney Karen Wold in Ventura County told Fox News.

Gonzalez will have to pay restitution that will include the cost for the collar he removed, which will be more than $2,300, Wold confirmed.

Three previously pleaded guilty, sentenced

A federal jury in Fresno Monday convicted two defendants of assisting in an effort to help Paulo Virgen Mendoza’s escape from California to Mexico after he allegedly killed Newman Police Corporal Ronil Singh during a Dec. 26, 2018 traffic stop, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.

Two other defendants were acquitted.

Three defendants charged with aiding the accused killer after the murder previously pleaded guilty and have been sentenced, according to a Department of Justice news release issued Tuesday morning.

Driver Spins Out in Pursuit, Then Commandeers CHP Cruiser

A police pursuit in Kern County Wednesday featured a suspect carjacking four vehicles, including a police cruiser, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the suspect as 29-year-old Juan Jose Galvez. The driver reportedly began in a silver Kia, continued in a Toyota Tacoma, then in a F5150 pickup truck, with the last vehicle being a CHP cruiser.

The chase began in the Palmdale area around 5 p.m. when the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Palmdale Station attempted to pull over the suspect and a female passenger, according to the LASD. He was suspected of driving recklessly and possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Person Hit, Killed By Vehicle On Highway 99 In Turlock

TURLOCK (CBS13) – Authorities say a person who was on Highway 99 near Turlock late Tuesday night was hit and killed by a vehicle.

The incident happened a little after 11 p.m. on the freeway at Lander Avenue. California Highway Patrol’s Merced division says a pedestrian who was on the freeway was killed. No information about the person has been released at this point.

The driver stayed at the scene after the pedestrian was hit and cooperated with the investigation, officers say.

Both directions on Highway 99 were closed for a time but were reopened by the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Los Angeles County bans flavored tobacco products amid rising health worries

Los Angeles County on Tuesday banned flavored tobacco products including e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco and menthol cigarettes amid concerns that the products appeal to young people. The county's Board of Supervisors is also urging California Gov. Gavin Newsom to pass a statewide ban on vaping as health concerns grow.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt the ban, which comes amid a widening health crisis, with more than a hundred California residents who vape having been hospitalized for lung damage.

The regulations are opposed by business owners and advocates of vaping who say e-cigarettes help people quit smoking. The vote came on a second reading after initial approval last week.

One Year From Today You Must Have A Real ID

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – One year from today people will need a REAL ID to fly domestically or enter secure federal facilities or military bases.

Starting October 1, 2020, people will not be allowed to use their old driver’s license or state-issued identification. You can use a valid passport, military ID, Global Entry Card, or other federally approved documents.

California toddler dies after left in hot car for hours while mother allegedly drank with friend, fell asleep

A toddler in California died after she was left for hours in a car -- with the heat on and a blanket covering her, according to a coroner's report as authorities said Monday they are investigating her death.

June Love Agosto, 2, died at a hospital on Sept. 23 after she was discovered inside her mother's vehicle in the unincorporated area of Torrance in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that deputies at the Carson station responded to a location regarding a "baby not breathing call" and found the 2-year-old unresponsive. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics transported the girl to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

$3.7M Settlement Reached In Pep Boys Lawsuit: Alameda County DA

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — A multi-million dollar settlement has been reached following allegations by Alameda County and other California counties that retailer Pep Boys violated California laws by routinely and illegally disposing of automotive fluids, used motor oil and other hazardous wastes into trash bins destined for municipal landfills, according to a news release from the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O'Malley announced the $3.7 million settlement Monday. It resolves the case against The Pep Boys Manny Moe & Jack of California (Pep Boys), which also alleged that Pep Boys routinely failed to shred customer records containing confidential information before disposing of those items in the trash.

SoCal gas prices rise sharply as U.S. prices fall; California refinery issues continue

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California continue to rise sharply as prices throughout the rest of the U.S. continue to fall.

According to GasBuddy, the national average is down two cents, currently costing $2.65 per gallon.

In California, the average as of Sunday is $3.98 per gallon and could hit $4 by late Sunday or Monday, GasBuddy says.

In San Diego County, the average price per gallon has increased by more than 40 cents over the last 13 days, AAA reports.

Student vaping epidemic has California schools frantically mobilizing

Students at Crescenta Valley High School have created an anti-vaping app. At nearby Rosemont Middle School, 55 students have joined an anti-vaping club. Santa Monica schools have booked 20 anti-vaping and drug awareness student assemblies and parent meetings. Staffers at various Southern California campuses are stepping up patrols of hidden nooks, installing costly detection devices, bringing in addiction counselors and modifying health curricula.

The recent surge of lung illnesses and deaths linked to vaping, an increasingly entrenched habit among many youths, largely caught school authorities flat-footed, and educators are urgently mobilizing anti-vaping efforts against what they see as a dangerous teen epidemic.
