At least five lawsuits have been filed against e-cigarette company Juul this week for allegedly targeting minors

Lawsuits against e-cigarette maker Juul were filed this week by the states of California and New York, two Washington state counties and a school district for allegedly targeting minors.

The lawsuits claim Juul's advertising campaigns target young people to use nicotine without knowing the associated risks by enticing them with flavor pods.
Juul spokesman Austin Finan told CNN that while the company has not yet reviewed the complaints, they "remain focused on resetting the vapor category in the US and earning the trust of society by working cooperatively with attorneys general, regulators, public health officials, and other stakeholders to combat underage use and convert adult smokers from combustible cigarettes."

Second phase of affordable housing project gets underway in Turlock

The effort to ease the shortage of affordable housing in Turlock took a small step forward recently when officials broke ground on the second phase of Avena Bella.

EAH Housing, an affordable housing nonprofit organization, has begun working on the second phase of the Avena Bella development in Turlock. Located at 500 W. Linwood Avenue, Avena Bella II is a 60-unit expansion of the 80-unit Avena Bella I, completed in 2014.

The two-story Mediterranean style apartment buildings will provide 60 new 1-,2-, and 3- bedroom rental apartments for housing for people whose income is below or at 30 percent to 60 percent of the area median income. It will share amenities with Avena Bella I, such as a resident community room with a kitchen, computer lab, pool, BBQ and recreation areas, children’s playground, among other features. It will also be environmentally friendly and will have a solar thermal water heating system and solar panels to reduce the development’s carbon footprint.

On Monday, PG&E announced that it might shut power off in a number of Californian counties on Wednesday, following a forecasted high wind event which could increase the risk of wildfires. Today, PG&E has released a list that suggests that more than 300,000 customers could be affected.

PG&E released a list of counties in California that could face a potential public safety power shutdown beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. The list states that an estimated 302,992 PG&E customers could be affected.

The list will be updated with the times of the planned shutdown in each county when PG&E decides whether or not it will go ahead with the power shut off. Currently, the utility company is urging customers to prepare for an outage that could last several days.

Jaedon Roberts kept his recruitment quiet until the end, and it remained that way even after it was over.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound two-way lineman from Avon (Conn.) Old Farms recently made his college choice, but he did it without fanfare or announcement.

“He committed to Cal,” Avon coach Pierce Brennan said. “I think they are getting an extremely twitched up kid who is 6-foot-3, 290 pounds. He’s sudden. He’s twitchy. He’s got grown man strength at 18 years old.”

Roberts committed to the Bears about a week ago. He will enroll at Cal in January, and Brennan believes that gives him a chance to play next fall, despite the challenges of competing at the line of scrimmage for true freshmen.

2 teens killed by schoolmate in California have been identified

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The two teens killed when a fellow student opened fire at their Southern California high school this week have been identified.

Grace Anne Muehlberger, 15, and Dominic Blackwell, 14, died at the hospital, authorities said. Three other teens were wounded and are expected to survive.

The gunman randomly shot students after taking out a .45-caliber pistol from his backpack at the quad area in Saugus High School in Santa Clarita. After targeting his schoolmates Thursday, he used the last bullet to shoot himself the same day he turned 16. He died at the hospital Friday, and his motive remains a mystery, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Chloe Rogers said her friend Muehlberger had a bubbly personality and knew how to make her laugh.

California’s Sonoma wine country reckons with wildfire damage to tourism economy

SONOMA, Calif. — As ash settles from the recent wildfires in one of the world’s most recognizable wine regions, the battle-tested vintners now face another problem – discouraged tourists.

The wildfires in California’s Sonoma County are among the largest and most intense in the state’s history. Fortunately for the wineries, the fires came at the close of the harvest this year and most of the grapes were saved. But that might not matter so much.

“The real damage from the fires isn’t on the harvest, it’s on the economy,” said Rob McMillan, executive vice president and founder of Silicon Valley Bank’s wine division. “From a tourism standpoint, people will choose not to come to the vineyards.”

‘Explain how things got this bad’: California congressman wants PG&E oversight hearing

A California lawmaker wants to pull PG&E before Congress for an oversight hearing over how the bankrupt company plans to prevent future problems with wildfires.

The request from Rep. Josh Harder, D-Turlock, is the latest in a long stream of blowback toward PG&E from politicians, businesses and the public since the company’s equipment triggered deadly California wildfires in 2017 and 2018.

Democratic presidential candidate and California Sen. Kamala Harris introduced legislation that would ban utilities under bankruptcy, like PG&E, from paying bonuses to executives.

The California Public Utilities Commission unanimously voted Wednesday to investigate PG&E’s massive October blackouts that left millions of Californians without power.

California’s fourth vaping death reported in Marin County

SACRAMENTO — California public health officials are urging people to stop vaping and using e-cigarettes as a fourth death related to vaping was reported in the state.

The state’s Department of Public Health said Wednesday 161 people have been hospitalized for severe breathing problems and lung damage since August.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday 45-year-old Amanda Margot Arconti of Vacaville died at a Novato hospital earlier this month. An official cause of death is pending.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified Vitamin E acetate as a “potential chemical of concern” but has yet to rule out other causes or ingredients.
