California’s San Joaquin Valley has a therapist shortage. Here’s how a university hopes to change that

Stockton’s University of the Pacific has launched a new master’s program to help address the region’s ongoing shortage of mental health professionals.

In fall 2024 the private university’s Benerd College, which specializes in education programs and degrees, will accept students into its new Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology major focused on marriage and family counseling. About 15 to 20 students are expected to make up the inaugural class.

Update: Stanislaus sheriff’s deputies locate missing girl in Idaho. Suspect arraigned

A missing juvenile girl whom Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies had been looking for since August was found safe in Idaho on Wednesday, officials reported. A man with her — Cristian Ceja, 27, of Turlock — was arrested.

The 16-year-old was designated as a runaway and was reported to have been last seen leaving her Turlock home in the middle of the night Aug. 27, the Turlock Journal reported. She was believed to be with Ceja.

Police arrest man after finding skimming device on ATM in Stanislaus County

 A man from Stockton was arrested on Wednesday after police received a tip regarding a person installing a skimming device at an ATM in Stanislaus County.

On Jan. 3, detectives with the Turlock Police Department received notification from an allied agency regarding a possible suspect and vehicle being involved in installing a skimming device at an ATM.

Turlock man sentenced to 80 years to life for murder committed during gun deal

in Community/crime/News

Jeramie Skylar Hoover, 25, was sentenced to 80 years to life in state prison on Wednesday for the 2020 murder of a man during an attempted gun sale in Turlock.

The standard sentence for murder in Stanislaus County is normally 25 years to life. However, his sentence was multiplied and enhanced due to several prior convictions that made him eligible for California’s three strikes law.

Man Arrested after Allegedly Leading Deputies on Pursuit in Stolen Vehicle

“On Tues., Dec 26th, 2023, at about 11 AM, deputies located a gray SUV which had been previously reported stolen. The car was first spotted on Rouse Ave in unincorporated West Modesto.

Deputies attempted to conduct an enforcement stop; however, the driver fled & a short pursuit ensued. In an effort to safely end the pursuit, deputies tried a police intervention technique that caused a patrol car to collide with a utility box on the side of the roadway of Kerr Ave in the Airport District.

Teenager shot days before Christmas on Camellia Way in Modesto has died, police say

A 17-year-old girl that was shot in Modesto died at a local hospital on Friday after spending more than a week in critical condition, police said.

The shooting happened on the 100 block of Camellia on Dec. 20. The street block is bordered by Miller Avenue on the north and Highway 132 on the south — near the Modesto Gospel Mission.

Turlock Police Department said John Snoke, 42, was arrested Wednesday morning after they received a tip about child pornography distribution.
