As cartels distribute killer drug, clinic workers aim to reduce demand in Stanislaus County

About 90% percent of new admits at the Aegis drug treatment clinic in Modesto test positive for fentanyl, a drug that’s driving a fatal overdose crisis in the United States. That’s a dramatic shift since the COVID-19 pandemic, a clinic spokesman said.

The office on McHenry Avenue once was commonly known as “the methadone clinic,” where adults hooked on heroin or prescription painkillers received medication assistance to reduce cravings for the drugs.

Solar panels will cut water loss from canals in Gila River Indian Community

In a move that may soon be replicated elsewhere, the Gila River Indian Community recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to put solar panels over a stretch of irrigation canal on its land south of Phoenix.

It will be the first project of its kind in the United States to actually break ground, according to the tribe’s press release.

Homeless: Pastor Dan’s Modesto Ministry of Food and Prayer

Years ago, Dan Lempenau was attending church when he had an epiphany. “This isn’t what Jesus is about,” he thought. “Jesus is about caring for the poor.” Since that time, some fifteen years now, “Pastor Dan” has been feeding homeless people in local Modesto Parks three days a week, day after day, week after week, rain or shine. His ministry features Bible lessons for those who wish to listen, but there are no requirements, and there is no judgment.

Another pedestrian dies, days after Modesto police announce grant for new safety efforts

A male pedestrian died Saturday after being struck on McHenry Avenue about midblock between Sylvan and Woodrow avenues, the Modesto Police Department reported.

The crash occurred about 7:20 p.m., according to a Modesto Fire Department incident summary. Emergency responders found the man down in the road, suffering major injuries. He was taken to a medical center, where he died.

Floodwaters on farms help boost aquifers

The historically wet winter early this year motivated greater adoption of a water management strategy known as flood-managed aquifer recharge, or flood-MAR, in which excess flood flows are diverted onto farmland to boost depleted groundwater aquifers.

“We knew from the previous year, even in intense drought years, we have opportunities with these big storm events and need to do everything we can,” said California Department of Water Resources Director Karla Nemeth, addressing water managers, farmers, government officials and others, as part of the Flood-MAR Forum in Sacramento last week. “Our ability to respond to those kinds of intense rain events is becoming increasingly important.”
