Shah Groceries now open for business

History of business: It’s been more than eight months since Sukhraaj Singh shared his vision of opening an international grocery store in Turlock, and now the doors at Shah Groceries on 2353 W. Main St. have officially opened.

The new, locally owned and operated grocer will offer products from all parts of India, the Middle East and of select Asian countries.

Stanislaus State has received $210,000 from HealthForce Partners Northern San Joaquin to award scholarships up to $5,000 to graduate students preparing for careers in social work, clinical counseling and marriage and family therapy.

The scholarships are aimed at addressing the shortage of mental health care providers in the northern San Joaquin Valley and are an element of Stan State’s participation in the San Joaquin Behavioral Health Workforce Partnership.

Turlock veteran honored with Quilt of Valor

Last month, Ralph and Wallean Biederman welcomed family and friends into their Turlock home for what they thought was a regular gathering. Little did they know that it was a surprise party, kept under wraps with the help of the Veterans Of Foreign Wars Turlock Post 5059, to present Ralph with a unique gift.

It was a large, red, white and blue quilt, stitched by family friend Becky Kelley. Representatives from the Turlock VFW draped it around Ralph, making him an official recipient of the Quilt of Valor.

Valley Pet Care initially posted on social media that it had to leave by Nov. 24. It has been leasing a 1,600-square-foot space on a month-to-month basis, and on Aug. 24 the agency gave its 90-day notice to end the lease.

Third suspect arrested in Modesto armed robbery, police report

The third and final suspect in a Modesto robbery on Monday was identified and arrested Tuesday afternoon, police reported.

Leland Lennear, 26, of Modesto faces charges of robbery, hit-an-run and criminal conspiracy, Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said.

Local law enforcement is seeking the public’s help in finding a missing Turlock teenager last seen with a suspected sexual predator.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Emergency Missing Advisory on Tuesday afternoon for 16-year-old Monica Ascensio. The advisory was issued out of concern for her safety.

Teamsters Organize Multiple Red Cross Facilities in California

Fixed collections workers at American Red Cross facilities in Modesto and Turlock, California both voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 386.

“We are thrilled to welcome Red Cross workers from Modesto and Turlock to the Teamsters,” said Jeff Berdion, Local 386 Secretary-Treasurer. “With two Red Cross facilities joining the Teamsters on the same day, these workers are making it abundantly clear that they have had enough. These men and women play a critical role in the California blood supply chain and deserve the benefits of a strong union contract.”
