Driver helps passengers to safety after StanRTA bus gets caught in Corral Fire

A Stanislaus County transit bus was caught in the flames of the Corral Fire Saturday evening.

After the Corral Fire sparked near Tracy in San Joaquin County, it produced enough smoke and fire to force cars on the highway to turn around and head westbound.

Head-on crash near Don Pedro Reservoir kills man, three women, CHP reports

Four people were killed in a two-vehicle collision Friday, May 31, near Don Pedro Reservoir in Tuolumne County.

The names of the victims were withheld pending notification of family, but a California Highway Patrol release identified them as a Stockton man, 56; a Modesto woman, 66; a Salida woman, 65; and a La Grange woman, 33.

Stanislaus State is investigating women’s basketball coach after player complaints

Stanislaus State is investigating its longtime women’s basketball coach over allegations he mistreated players.

The allegations against him include verbally abusing players, misusing the program’s money — including not providing players with their full per diem for meals — inappropriate physical contact during training and exceeding NCAA limits for training hours during the preseason, according to an April 26 story in the Signal, the university’s student newspaper.

Local mother helps others cope with loss through new children’s book

Not all people process a loss the same way. For Kristin Pettit of Turlock, it took nearly 15 years after the suicide of her first husband in 2004 for her to share one of her many feelings with the world.

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pettit poured herself a glass of wine, went inside her pool, and began writing her thoughts away. In 15 minutes, she had written a story of a family of butterflies, each dealing with the loss of a loved one in a different way. The main theme of the story was each butterfly having a different way of remembering their loved one, which resulted in arguments.

Swimmer found dead after going missing at Woodward Reservoir

A man who went missing after he tried to swim across a channel at Woodward Reservoir on Sunday afternoon was found dead, deputies said.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said the man went missing near Mountain View Point at Woodward Reservoir sometime after 2 p.m.
