ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Local golfers win their respective Division titles

The Turlock Journal broke with tradition this week and selected two prep Athletes of the Week: golfers Christian Maggard of Turlock and Ethan Gonsalves of Denair.

Maggard won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 championship Monday with a round of 65, while Gonsalves claimed the D-6 title for a second consecutive season with a round of 67.

Population grows locally, across California for first time since 2020

After three years of gradual population loss in California, the state has experienced a small rebound.

According to a report released on April 30 by the California Department of Finance (DOF), California’s population increased by roughly 67,000 people last year to 39,128,162. In total, 254 jurisdictions gained population while 283 lost population. Of the counties that saw population growth were Stanislaus and Merced. Each city in Stanislaus County had a rise in residents while Merced County only had one city (Gustine) lose population.

Box truck strikes and badly injures man standing by car on Highway 99 in Keyes, CHP reports

A commercial truck struck a man standing next to a car on Highway 99 in Keyes early Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Ezequiel Gonzalez Mejia, 41, of Los Angeles suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, a news release said. The nature of his injuries was not reported.

Massive fire consumes Stanislaus County building

 Several fire agencies were needed to fight a massive fire that engulfed a building in Stanislaus County.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, the Denair Fire Department said it responded to a structure fire in the 3300 block of E. Barnhart Road. Upon arrival, crews found a multi-bay outbuilding up in flames.

Armed suspect shot, killed after charging Stanislaus County deputies near Turlock

A man is dead after he charged at Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies with a weapon near Turlock on Sunday, deputies said.

Deputies were initially dispatched for a suspicious person report along the 3100 block of North Quincy Road. Citing dispatcher information, deputies said a white man was trespassing and armed with a weapon. It's not clear what weapon the man had.

Giant human pink hard hat ribbon creates visual call to action

Pink ribbons are a common sight leading into October, as communities aim to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Wednesday, however, EMCOR/Shambaugh & Son, L.P. went above and beyond to make breast cancer screening a topic of discussion for everyone when the contractor gathered over 440 people donning signature pink hard hats for an oversized, human display of a pink ribbon.

The display was a visible call to action for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and EMCOR’s 9th Annual “Protect Yourself. Get Screened Today” campaign. The event was held at Valley Milk’s new plant construction site in Turlock.

Rainbow Fabrics settles into new location

Longtime downtown business Rainbow Fabrics has packed up shop and moved just down the road into the Turlock Town Center where already, it feels like home.

“We’re happy here,” said owner Roselia Nunez. “Over here, we have no complaints.”

Central Valley Brewfest set to return to Turlock

The Central Valley Brewfest is returning for its 11th year in May. 

The annual event is taking place on May 11 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. 

Breweries expected to be featured at the event include Dust Bowl Brewing Company, Blaker Brewing, Contentment Brewing, 18Seventy Brew, Last Call Brewing and Dying Breed Brewing.

Community shows love for Turlock

Walking or driving around Turlock this week, people may notice that a number of parks are cleaner, a few playgrounds have fresher paint and some of the community’s less fortunate folks have larger smiles on their faces. Most of it is a result of the generosity and volunteerism displayed during Saturday’s Love Turlock event, the city-wide community service celebration.

This year’s Love Turlock was the 13th in history and saw hundreds of volunteers of all ages participate in 34 community service projects throughout the city, a significant increase from 20 last year and 27 in 2022.
