It’s a new year, baby! Stanislaus County medical centers report first births of 2023

Some Stanislaus County hospitals continued the tradition Sunday, Jan. 1, of announcing the first births of 2023.

Doctors Medical Center could share only limited information about the first baby born there — just that he was born at 12:18 a.m. He weighed in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and measured 19.5 inches long, according to Tenet Healthcare spokeswoman Krista Deans.

Two shootings, two stabbings — one fatal — as Stanislaus County rings in the new year

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day morning were marked with violence in Stanislaus County, including two shootings and two stabbings, one of which was fatal. The latter was Turlock’s second homicide of the holiday weekend and appears to be the first of 2023.

Little has been released about the homicide, which was on the 400 block of East Linwood Avenue.

Georgia man wanted in North Augusta road rage shooting

Police are looking for a Georgia man after a road rage incident led to a shooting.

Tymere Dae'Shaun Nyree Hill, 23, of Metter, Georgia, is wanted in connection to a shooting that occurred after an argument during a wreck off an interstate ramp.

Hill has warrants for attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Turlock sideshow leads to fatal shooting of man and at least 2 crashes, police report

A sideshow in Turlock led to a fatal shooting and at least two traffic crashes early Saturday, police said.

The man who died was a 20-year-old Tracy resident whose name was not disclosed, a news release from the Turlock Police Department said. No arrests have been reported in the shooting.

Man killed in Christmas Eve crash near Keyes identified as local brewer

A man who was killed in a Christmas Eve crash has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Tyler Klaproth, 40, died in a single-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99 around 1 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle left the road and hit a tree. The SUV he was driving went off the west edge of 99, near Keyes Road, and into a dirt and grass area before crashing, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Turlock Moms nonprofit hopes to build tighter community bond

‘Moms’ clubs aren’t anything new to communities across the nation, but a group of Turlock mothers are taking it to the next level by turning their group into a nonprofit, service-based organization.

The Turlock Moms Club has been operating as an independently run 503(c) organization since October. The group was founded by Turlock mother Alicia Turino, who has been a member of similar clubs in other cities in years past.

Evictions are back up in Stanislaus County, after two years of a pandemic lull

After a significant drop in 2020 and 2021, the number of individuals facing eviction this year has returned to pre-pandemic levels.

In 2018 and 2019, Stanislaus Superior Court processed more than 3,636 eviction cases. The next two years, characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw 1,654 evictions – fewer than half as many.

Modesto ranked second worst for traffic crashes among cities of similar size in California

Modesto was ranked the second worst for traffic crashes among its peer cities across the state, according to the latest rankings from the California Office of Traffic Safety, sustaining a trend since 2017.

The rankings look at about a dozen types of collisions, including drivers hitting pedestrians, fatal crashes, DUI crashes, hit-and-run and speed-related crashes.
