Homeless man tragically killed crossing street had gotten clean, was turning life around

MODESTO, Calif. — A man experiencing homelessness in Modesto was tragically killed while crossing McHenry Avenue. It came at a time when his family says he was turning his life around after battles with mental health and drug addition.

To his family, he always was and will always be the little brother.

“He was always laughing, always joking," said Nicole Fox, Hadley's sister. ”He was just that little brother, you know?”

Experts, families of overdose victims to talk fentanyl at free Turlock meeting this week

A town hall meeting titled “Fentanyl in Our Community” will be held in Turlock on Thursday to provide education on the deadly drug, community resources and Narcan training, according to two of the presenting organizations: the Turlock Unified School District and Stanislaus County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS).

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, according to information on the TUSD website.

Our View: State legislative seats will be filled in Nov. 8 election

The election in November to fill the 35th Assembly District seat is among California’s most interesting. The two competing candidates are both Democrats — Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez and local family physician Jasmeet Bains.

Surprising political observers and the two candidates themselves, Perez, who has been an elected supervisor for nearly a decade, barely finished in first place in the June primary ahead of political newcomer Bains. Perez had 50.5 percent of the vote to Bains’ 49.5.

Local roundup: Lodi golf third in DI, moves on to Masters

The Lodi High girls golf team placed third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament on Tuesday at Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville, securing a place at the section Masters tournament next Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Pleasant Grove won the team standings with a 379, followed by Granite Bay in second with a 387. The Masters takes the top six teams from Division I, and Oak Ridge (396), Folsom (428) and St. Francis (450) filled out those positions.

Volleyball notebook: Beyer one of many teams hunting playoff success after league title

In the past two seasons, the Patriots have a combined 29-0 league record.

The program has gone through a transition in recent years and when head coach Melinda Freeman took over last season, she knew the team could be special.
