Possible gun threat prompted large law enforcement investigation at Ceres School, district says

 Law enforcement officers swarmed a school in Central California late Monday morning due to reports of a possible gun threat, officials say.

The Ceres Unified School District said in a statement that they were alerted by Ceres police about a possible threat against Cesar Chavez Junior High School. That school, along with neighboring La Rosa Elementary, went on a precautionary lockdown.

Motorcycle rider ejected off bridge and killed in Merced County crash, according to CHP

A motorcycle rider died Sunday when he was ejected from the motorcycle in a Merced County crash, according to authorities.

At about 9:18 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to the area of State Route 165 just north of River Road, for a report of a collision involving an SUV and a motorcycle, according to CHP Officer Eric Zuñiga. Authorities said the section of the road where the collision occurred is located on a bridge that spans the Merced River.

Over 1K marijuana plants eradicated in bust in Merced County

Over a thousand marijuana plants have been eradicated as a result of an illegal grow bust in Merced County, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office announced.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Enforcement says they, along with Code Enforcement Teams, served a search warrant for an illegal marijuana grow at a home in Turlock located in the 17000 block of East Clausen Road.

Stanislaus hospital faces closure after Medicare decision. County, federal support sought

Stanislaus Surgical Hospital of Modesto notified the county last week that the hospital is likely to close April 30 for an undetermined time, due to a federal agency decision to remove it from the Medicare program.

Maria Munoz, human resources director for Stanislaus Surgical, informed Stanislaus County’s chief executive office that almost 200 employee layoffs are anticipated. The hospital said it was aggressively challenging the decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which said the hospital failed to comply with nine conditions of participation in Medicare.

Turlock police arrest juvenile suspect in deadly shooting. He already was in custody

A 17-year-old male from Turlock was arrested Monday in an April 16 shooting that killed one person and wounded another.

When the Turlock Police Department investigation identified the alleged gunman, he already was in custody at the Stanislaus County Juvenile Detention Center on an unrelated case, according to a news release. Detectives rebooked the teen on charges of murder and attempted murder.
