Suspect arrested in fatal shooting near Modesto Airport

A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of 38-year-old Modesto resident Matthew McDonough on Thursday, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday.

Suspect Matthew Douglas Cook, 39 and from Modesto, was located by detectives with the Special Investigations Unit on Friday afternoon outside a home near the intersection of Coffee Road and East Coolidge Avenue.

Fire department in Stanislaus County goes on hiring spree to fill vacant positions

Turlock has hired seven firefighters to fill Fire Department vacancies.

The new recruits began a 14-week academy training Tuesday, Sept. 27, and are expected to start working shifts in January, said Capt. Jason Bernard, department spokesman.

Defense Questions Victim’s Decision to Not Call for Help Immediately – Judge Still Sets Trial in Battery Case

MODESTO, CA – After a preliminary trial here in Stanislaus Superior Court last week – featuring police and other witness testimony about a June 26 violent incident – the accused was ordered held to stand trial.

Charged with felony violations of penal codes 273.5(a) battery against a spouse/cohabitant, 422 (a) threat to commit serious bodily injury or death and 245 (e) (4) assault by means likely to cause “great bodily injury,” Jillian Vijsma sat in silence as two different witnesses corroborated the story against them.

Mobile homes and 40 vehicles catch fire in blaze at the Fresno and Merced county line

Firefighters early Saturday night continued to battle a blaze involving four mobile homes and 40 vehicles along the Fresno/Merced county line.

Called the Russell Incident by Cal Fire, the fire is on the 12000 block of North Russell, about an hour west of Fresno and a few miles south of Dos Palos.

Wildfire Resilience, Central Valley Police Funding Due

In a busy legislative week, local Congressman Josh Harder announced some new funding for programs to benefit firefighting efforts and police departments in California.

On Friday, Sept. 23 Representative Harder announced that the Department of the Interior has invested over $7.5 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to clean 9,969 acres of federal land across California, drastically reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires.

Update: Investigators are trying to identify gunman in shooting outside a Modesto motel

Investigators are trying to identify a male suspect responsible for a shooting Friday outside the El Capitan Motel in Modesto.

At 7:45 p.m., fire and police units went to the 1100 block of Needham Street, finding one person with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the motel.

Turlock motorcyclist dies in weekend crash west of Jamestown

A Turlock man died in a motorcycle crash near Jamestown on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. near the intersection where Highways 108 and 120 split west of Jamestown.
