Hidden homeless caves found dug into Tuolumne River bank in Modesto

Hidden homeless caves tucked along the Tuolumne River were cleared out by volunteer groups and the Modesto Police Department over the weekend.

Volunteers from Operation 9-2-99 and the Tuolumne River Trust partnered with the Modesto Police Department to clear out 7,600 pounds of trash. They also had two truckloads and a trailer of garbage that were removed from the area.

Volunteers sought for annual homeless count

in Community/News/People

Every winter volunteers scour Turlock helping officials to get a physical census of the number of homeless individuals and families in the city as part of a countywide point-in-time count.

The annual count data helps determine the scope of homelessness in each city and the county as a whole, define existing resources, and identify any gaps in services. The Stanislaus Community System of Care, which oversees the count, is looking for a few hundred local volunteers to aid in this effort.

Chris Quintiliani grew up loving old cars and taking on the challenge of restoring and giving them a chance to flex their muscles once again on the road.

He and his friend Rick Moore have a YouTube channel called The Montana Barn Find. One of the videos features a 1957 Chevy Bel Air that took over 30 years to finally acquire. Quintiliani’s dad knew the car was on a Montana farm and tried to buy it. Finally, after persistence and patience, the owner relented and agreed to sell them the car. The men named the car and later their YouTube channel, “The Montana Barn Find.”

Jessica’s House founder, therapist to author book

Jessica’s House founding director Erin Nelson and the nonprofit’s director of outreach and education Colleen E. Montague will be sharing their insights in operating the successful grief support organization in a new book.

Jessica’s House was established in Turlock in 2012 to provide grief support for local children and families. The book, which is expected to be released by Baker Books in the spring of 2025, will include perspectives from Nelson regarding her personal losses.

Annual survey finds more homeless in Turlock, county

As the Turlock City Council continues to debate the best way to spend funding to address the homeless crisis, the annual point-in-time survey results were released finding an increase in homeless individuals living in Turlock, as well as an increase throughout Stanislaus County as a whole.

Every winter the Stanislaus Community System of Care conducts a point-in-time count one day in January where volunteers scour the county taking a physical census of the number of homeless individuals in each city and surrounding areas.

Homeless Count Released For Point-In-Time Effort

The Stanislaus Community System of Care (CSOC) has released its 2023 Point-In-Time (PIT) homeless count, identifying 2,091 homeless persons in Stanislaus County, an increase of 234 people from last year’s total count. The results were released on Friday, May 19.

“Homelessness affects all of us. The PIT Count is an important resource to gauge how many people are experiencing homelessness in our communities,” said Emily Webster, Vice-Chair of CSOC. “The information helps us develop support services and housing to help this population.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wins gold, silver medals at first jujitsu tournament

If you’re a part of the Bay Area’s thriving jujitsu scene, there’s a chance the founder of Facebook will pin you to the floor.

Mark Zuckerberg competed in his first jujitsu tournament Saturday in Woodside, walking away with gold and silver medals for the local Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu team, with which he trains. He shared news of the win with his 11.3 million Instagram followers, posting photos of him posing with his coaches, grappling with opponents and pensively strolling onto a mat.

Firefighters finish patient’s yardwork

 Firefighters in Turlock traded in hoses and ladders for a lawn mower and a leaf blower Friday morning.

In a Facebook post, the Turlock Fire Department said that crews responded to a house after someone had a medical emergency while doing yardwork.
