Emergency Rental Assistance Program

Stanislaus County and the City of Modesto are pleased to announce that soon funding will be made available through an Emergency Rental Assistance program supported by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Emergency Rental Assistance program makes available $25 billion to assist households unable to pay rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds are provided directly to States, U.S. Territories, local governments, and Indian tribes. Government agencies must use these funds to provide assistance to eligible households through rental assistance programs.

Stanislaus County and the City of Modesto will be receiving a combined amount of roughly $16,400,000 for distribution to those who are eligible and can demonstrate a need. The Emergency Rental Assistance program will be facilitated locally through a collaboration between the City and County to distribute funds to residents in households throughout Stanislaus County.

City Manager Joe Lopez stated, “Too many in our community are scared about the prospect of becoming unsheltered as a result of the pandemic, and we look forward to putting this new funding source directly into the hands of those in need as soon as possible.”

Every Child Matters

You can make a difference in the life of a foster child in Stanislaus County. Become a resource parent. To learn more, please join Every Child Matters, a virtual event on February 27, 2021 from 9 am to 11 am.

The event will feature a panel of former foster youth sharing their foster care experiences and stories of inspiration. Resource parents (formerly referred to as foster parents) are individuals, couples, or families who act as caregivers providing out-of-home care for children in foster care.

Could California’s county fairs move to later in the year? ‘It’d be a tough call to do’

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — After all the slings and arrows of 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic, the idea of throwing the biggest and safest party of 2021 is a tantalizing idea for some organizers. With vaccinations ongoing and a possible end to the pandemic in sight, some say having that safe party later in the year could still be on the table.

“It would be absolutely amazing,” said Matt Cranford, CEO of the Stanislaus County Fair. “The lowest point of my entire career was having to cancel the Stanislaus County Fair last year. That was my lowest point bar none professionally, so to come back a year later and just pull off something, do something phenomenally great, for the community… would be huge.”

That being said, it’s not that easy. There’s a lot of parts to a county fair. Usually, the Stanislaus County Fair has half their entertainment lined up.

“This year, it’s been different - just trying to get commitments has been a little tougher. On the entertainment, a lot of the entertainers want guaranteed contracts,” Cranford said. “How are you going to step out and do a guaranteed contract for $30,000, $40,000 (or) $80,000 for an artist not knowing if you can do a fair or not?”

COVID Vaccines

Stanislaus County’s COVID-19 vaccine schedule at Stanislaus State continues this week. At Stanislaus State Fitzpatrick Arena, officials will be vaccinating Phase 1A and ages 65+ with a second dose only on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Damage From Kitchen Fire Temporarily Closes Beloved Turlock Restaurant

TURLOCK (CBS13) — A beloved Turlock restaurant was damaged in a kitchen fire over the weekend.

Turlock City Fire crews responded to Latif’s By Pedretti late Sunday afternoon for a reported fire and found smoke coming from the HVAC units and vents on the roof. Firefighters also saw smoke down the floor level of the two-story restaurant.

Firefighters quickly went on the offensive and several other agencies soon responded to help.

It appears the fire started on a commercial cooktop in the kitchen of the restaurant. Thankfully, the automatic fire extinguishing system in the hood had been set off, somewhat containing the fire.

Still, firefighters say appliances on the wall and ceiling area around the stove were damaged. Further, smoke permeated through much of the building – requiring the use of high-powered fans to get it out.

Turlock High grad honors late daughter through candle business

Denair resident and Turlock High School alumna Kaylee Shipman is helping those stuck inside during the pandemic fill their homes with a little bit of warmth — and some sensational aromas — all while celebrating the memory of her late daughter. 

Shipman first started her business, MC Candles, in October 2019 and has since amassed thousands of followers on social media, providing homemade products to residents of not only her own town but Turlock, Modesto, Hughson, Chowchilla and even other states. She knows many people may not understand the name of her business, but that’s alright; it means something incredibly important to her.

“MC Candles is named after my daughter, Madalynn Corvello,” Shipman said.

Shipman’s daughter Madalynn was born in November 2017 but passed away shortly after her birth. She would have been almost two years old when Shipman first started her business, which coincidentally got its start during the same month as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. The day of remembrance is held annually on Oct. 15 and sees participants light a candle in memory of a lost little one.

Rental scams reported in Turlock

The Turlock Police Department has issued a warning for residents about a rental scam that has been making the rounds online in January.

Over the course of the month the police department took five reports of rental fraud that were eventually linked by an investigator to one individual, who lives outside the United States.

The scammer was posting local properties on social media and other third-party rental websites as being for rent, but in reality, the properties were already occupied and/or not for rent, according to the police department.

At least with the five cases reported to the police department, the victims lost significant amounts of money to the scammer.

As a warehouse manager at a Food 4 Less in Los Angeles, Norma Leiva greets delivery drivers hauling in soda and chips and oversees staff stocking shelves and helping customers. At night, she returns to the home she shares with her elderly mother-in-law, praying the coronavirus isn’t traveling inside her.

A medical miracle at the end of last year seemed to answer her prayers: Leiva, 51, thought she was near the front of the line to receive a vaccine, right after medical workers and people in nursing homes. Now that California has expanded eligibility to millions of older residents — in a bid to accelerate the administration of the vaccines — she is mystified about when it will be her turn.

“The latest I’ve heard is that we’ve been pushed back. One day I hear June, another mid-February,” said Leiva, whose sister, also in the grocery business, was sickened last year with the virus, which has pummeled Los Angeles County — the first U.S. county to record 1 million cases. “I want the elderly to get it because I know they’re in need of it, but we also need to get it, because we’re out there serving them. If we’re not healthy, our community’s not healthy.”

2021 Santa Barbara County Fair uncertain, but virtual livestock auction will proceed

When Nipomo FFA chapter member and sheep breeder Emily Ward learned that the 2020 Santa Barbara County Fair was canceled due to COVID-19, she opted not to participate in the virtual auction that was held in June, but she plans to participate in a second one slated for this summer. 

It's still too early to determine if the 2021 County Fair, slated for July 14 to July 18, will happen, but a virtual auction already is in the works, according to Kevin Merrill, who sits on the fair's board of directors. 

"We're just putting it out there now, trying to get an idea of how many kids will participate," Merrill said. "We want to make sure that the kids who have an animal participate and there's some way of being able to sell those." 

Each year, local FFA and 4-H youths have the opportunity to sell livestock during a three-day event at the annual fair. FFA and 4-H members typically work to arrange potential buyers and processing well before the auction. On average, about 2,000 animals are sold during the auction.
