Hughson, Keyes school employees to be honored by state

Two local school employees are moving on to represent Stanislaus County in the California Department of Education’s statewide recognition program for those who go above and beyond for their schools.

Hughson Unified School District Maintenance, Operations and Transportation worker Sal Ramirez and Keyes Union School District Student Support Specialist Susan Hanson were honored on Jan. 22 as two of 28 honorees during the Stanislaus County Office of Education’s 13th annual “Employees Making a Difference” ceremony, which recognizes outstanding classified (non-supervisory) education employees throughout the county.

‘Just a phenomenal person’ | San Joaquin corrections sergeant who died in off-duty accident laid to rest

TURLOCK, Calif. — The somber tones of bag pipes outside of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock led a processional of mourners, family, friends and co-workers of Cesar Fuentes, a San Joaquin County correctional sergeant.

Fuentes, 32, was killed Jan. 12 when he was headed home after work and crashed into a pick-up truck in French Camp. Ten days later, Fuentes was buried in the same Turlock community in which he was born.

"He was just a phenomenal person," said Fuentes' sister, Marlene Larios. "He was very funny — little tornado. And he's always wanted to serve since I can remember."

A family of three is safe after they plunged through ice and into freezing water in California on Saturday, police say.

Around 2:30 p.m., police arrived at Big Bear Lake to learn a father, mother and their child had fallen through the ice while they were out playing on the frozen lake, KTTV reported.

“The two ladies were yelling but they were kind of thrashing around which is the worst thing to do in ice apparently,” witness Sandy Bussey told KNBC. “We were just trying to yell at them, ‘stay calm don’t move, just hold on.’”

He's one of nearly 200 people living in a sprawling camp here that has sprung up along a popular recreation corridor. It's a community, Gibson says, that often feels caught between opposing forces who aren't always listening.

"I mean, they [local officials] want us to be able to govern ourselves, but they are not giving us the tools we need," Gibson says. "They don't want you hiding, but they don't want you in their face, you know?"
