Local ballplayers selected to 32nd Rotary All-Star Game at Stan State

Warrior Field on the campus of Stanislaus State will once again play host to some of the top prep baseball players in the county on Saturday with the return of the Modesto Sunrise Rotary All-Star Game.

The 32nd edition of the annual all-star showcase will feature 45 ballplayers from 22 schools in Stanislaus County, including a handful from Turlock-area teams.

Myles Mcfarland of Cosumnes Oaks took home first place honors in the 11o metres hurdles for varsity boys.

Track athletes shine at divisional meets

For the second consecutive year, Turlock High School’s girls track and field program lifted a blue banner.

At the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 meet at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs claimed first in the team competition with a score of 114. Coming in second was Bella Vista High with a score of 66. On the boys side, Turlock settled for second with a score of 69 behind champion Bella Vista and their score of 92.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Local golfers win their respective Division titles

The Turlock Journal broke with tradition this week and selected two prep Athletes of the Week: golfers Christian Maggard of Turlock and Ethan Gonsalves of Denair.

Maggard won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 championship Monday with a round of 65, while Gonsalves claimed the D-6 title for a second consecutive season with a round of 67.

Pitman’s newest record holder named Modesto Bee boys basketball Player of the Year

Two years ago, Pitman boys basketball coach Harvey Marable got exactly what he felt the team needed when a 14-year-old, barely 6-foot freshman stepped into the gym.

He was tasked with replacing a senior-heavy class that was led by a four-year varsity player who left Pitman as one of the best players in school history.

Thirty-five local grapplers punch tickets to section championships

The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament this weekend will feature a plethora of area wrestlers after an eventful two days of boys divisional and girls regional action.

The wrestling programs of Pitman, Turlock, Hilmar and Hughson will send a total of 35 wrestlers to the Masters at the Stockton Arena on Friday and Saturday. Leading the way with the most qualifiers are the Pride, who will be sending 20 student-athletes to the tournament, including all 14 of their boys varsity wrestlers. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will be sending 10 wrestlers, while the Huskies will send three and the Yellowjackets two.

Next week, spring training will get underway for all 30 Major League Baseball organizations. Among the hundreds of big leaguers and top prospects reporting to camp will be a handful of Turlockers, each at different levels and with varying goals for 2024.

Tyler Soderstrom, Oakland Athletics

Turlock High graduate Tyler Soderstrom will be reporting for his fourth consecutive major league spring training on Tuesday in Mesa, AZ., though it will be his first with MLB experience under his belt. After making his debut with Oakland Athletics on July 14, the catcher and first baseman admittedly struggled at the plate,  just .160 with a .472 OPS, three home runs and 43 strikeouts in 138 plate appearances over 45 games.

Local basketball teams await playoff seeding after strong regular seasons

Although they are crosstown rivals, the girls basketball programs of Turlock High and Pitman High must stand beside each other atop the Central California Athletic League standings and share the league championship after they each finished their regular seasons with 8-2 records. There won’t be any bragging rights on the side, either, as they split head-to-head matchups 1-1.

For the Bulldogs, it is their second consecutive 8-2 season, though it’s their first league title since the 2018-2019 campaign. It’s also their first league title under head coach Erica Hernandez. Pitman head coach Parmine Randhawa is celebrating the same milestone.

Free on-site sports camps and professional coaching are provided to fourth- through-sixth-graders enrolled in the Ceres Unified School District’s After School Education and Safety (ASES) program thanks to a new partnership with Turlock Sports Park, Inc.

Area wrestling programs were in action across the Central Valley over the weekend, with several grapplers placing and earning first-place medals.

Hilmar Boys at Westside Invitational in Firebaugh — It was a career week for Hilmar’s Cody Bray from Thursday through Saturday, who represented the Yellowjackets in the 219-pound weight division at the 2024 Westside Invitational in Firebaugh. Following a first-round bye, Bray pinned all four of his opponents to earn first-place in his class.
