Lopez: How did I do with my preseason predictions? Well, not too bad

in Sports

Only one more night of high school football remains in the Stanislaus District as both Escalon and Ripon vie for CIF State titles on Saturday.

It has been another exciting year filled with games going down to the wire and unexpected breakout players.

Before Saturday, I thought I’d take a look at my preseason predictions, which were published on Aug. 22, the day before the start of the season.

I made predictions for each of the leagues in the Stanislaus District and correctly picked six of the eight winners.

Tyler Soderstrom hopes to build on strong summer

in Sports

Learning the game from his father and watching his brother go through the recruiting and draft processes have helped Soderstrom as he prepares for the next step in his baseball career. Soderstrom, a senior at Turlock High School in California, will have to decide between embarking on a professional career this summer or attending UCLA in the fall.

California prep catcher Tyler Soderstrom wasn’t active on the high school baseball showcase circuit until this summer. He played in his home state of California in previous years but knew the summer after his junior year of high school was critical for exposure.

His approach to the high school summers was by design. Growing up in a baseball family, Soderstrom was familiar with the MLB draft process and knew what events were important to improving his draft stock.

He excelled this summer to make him a well-known prospect for the 2020 MLB draft.

MJC sneaks past American River to set up NorCal showdown with San Mateo

in Local Roundup/Sports

When Modesto Junior College freshman running back Payton Bass (Pitman) struggled for playing time early in the season, he didn’t pout and instead worked harder in practice and asked questions, coach Rusty Stivers said.

“I know I am a good player but it was hard (adjusting to college football) at first,” Bass said.

Against American River in a CCCAA NorCal semifinal on Saturday night at MJC, Bass had a career-high 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Pirates beat the Beavers, 35-28.

MJC (9-2) advanced to the NorCal championship game, where it will travel to face the College of San Mateo — a 21-0 winner over Fresno City College — at noon next Saturday. The winner will advance to the state title game against the Southern California champ on Dec. 14 in Bakersfield.

“Tonight was for my team and for the sophomores,” Bass said. “We had to work and it wasn’t an easy fight.”

Cal lands commitment from Connecticut lineman Jaedon Roberts

in Local Roundup/Sports

Jaedon Roberts kept his recruitment quiet until the end, and it remained that way even after it was over.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound two-way lineman from Avon (Conn.) Old Farms recently made his college choice, but he did it without fanfare or announcement.

“He committed to Cal,” Avon coach Pierce Brennan said. “I think they are getting an extremely twitched up kid who is 6-foot-3, 290 pounds. He’s sudden. He’s twitchy. He’s got grown man strength at 18 years old.”

Roberts committed to the Bears about a week ago. He will enroll at Cal in January, and Brennan believes that gives him a chance to play next fall, despite the challenges of competing at the line of scrimmage for true freshmen.

Sac-area football teams fall to powers from out of area; did that affect Bee rankings?

in Local Roundup/Sports

The thing about rankings is losses to quality teams do not equate to despair, nor do they hurt a team’s status come Sac-Joaquin Section playoff time.

Strength of schedules matter for our Bee rankings and those from our friends at publications such as Cal-Hi Sports, MaxPreps, NorCalPreps and others.

Capital Christian remains No. 4 in these rankings because it lost to a team that very well might have beaten everyone in this region, a 24-6 setback to state-ranked power Vista Murrieta.

Rocklin lost to Damonte Ranch of Reno, a state power in the Silver State, and remains firm in our rankings. Whitney fell at Central Section No. 1-ranked Central of Fresno, so no shame there. Same with Placer falling in the final seconds to storied Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa.

CCAA takes notice as women’s volleyball rebuild comes of age

in Local Roundup/Sports

The rebuilding of the Stanislaus State women’s volleyball team is taking shape. The rest of the California Collegiate Athletic Association is taking notice.

In the preseason coaches’ poll, the Warriors were picked to finish second behind Stan Francisco State.

Stanislaus State, 16-11 overall, 9-9 in the CCAA last season, reached the conference tournament but lost in the first round.

"(The poll result) hopefully will give our team some confidence going into the season being recognized and gained the respect from other coaches in the conference," said fifth-year coach Mallori Gibson-Rossi, whose team opens the season at the Dixie State Tournament Sept. 6-7.

East County high school football season kicks off on Aug. 23

in Local Roundup/Sports

The high school football season kicks off on Aug. 23.

For most Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) football fans, that will mean jumping into their cars to watch their local squads, at least for the first week.

Four of the six BVAL teams — all but Antioch and Deer Valley — will start their 2019 campaigns on the road, but nobody is complaining, and every squad is entering the season with high expectations.

“Everyone wants to be 10-0, but on the same hand, you want to be competitive and get after it,” said Heritage head coach Don Sanders. “I think we’ll definitely be able to do that.”

Liberty, the reigning California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 1-A state champions, will travel to Vacaville (6-5 last season) for a rematch against the 2018 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff squad, whom the Lions beat 35-10 at home last year.

Pride boys water polo welcomes alumnus as new head coach

in Local Roundup/Sports

Pitman High alumnus Justin Jones is taking over the duties for the Pride boys water polo program and he has his eyes set on the future.

Last year was arguably the program’s best season ever and this year looks to be headed in the same direction.

“A lot of the guys from last season really worked hard in the off-season, all summer in Turlock United, a new program we have, combined with Turlock and Pitman, and that was successful,” said Jones, who graduated in 2008. “A lot of our guys played and they strive for a section title. It is a longshot, but this is an opportunity to show yourself and we have a group of boys that work hard.”
