LPGA great Annika Sorenstam co-leads U.S. Senior Women’s Open with a California teaching pro who can’t stop smiling

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Dana Ebster wasn’t sure what to make of the interview area on the porch at Brooklawn Country Club.

“Can we practice first?” she asked as she gingerly stepped up toward the mic. Ebster, by the way, rocked the interview.

Just before Ebster flew across the country to Connecticut, she was up at 6 a.m. pulling carts out at Turlock Golf and Country Club in central California where she runs a junior clinic and works in the pro shop.

STOCKTON – Turlock American enjoyed a five-run fifth inning Saturday and Northgate could not recover in an 8-5 opening-round loss in the Section 6 All-Star Tournament at Christa McAuliffe Middle School’s Bruneel Field.

Tony Sanchez had the big bat for Northgate, going 2 for 3 with a pair of ground-rule doubles that knocked in three runs – Travis Rose (two runs) in the third and sixth innings and Colten Nascimento in the sixth.

In the fourth inning Northgate’s Landyn Parker plated Logan Ortega on a fielder’s choice and Kylil Mallory scooted home on a wild pitch.

Turlock used the long ball in the fifth inning – Wyatt Smith belted a two-run home run and Izak Marquez legged out a two-RBI triple.

Stan State alumnus earns spot on U.S. Olympic baseball team

Former Stanislaus State pitcher and current Tampa Bay Rays prospect Joe Ryan was recently named to USA Baseball’s 24-man roster and will compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. 

Baseball is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2008 and Ryan will be part of the team’s starting rotation. The 12th-ranked prospect in the Rays system, Ryan currently pitches in the minor leagues for the Durham Bulls. He was a member of the qualifying roster for Team USA and helped them go 4-0 in the qualifying games last month.

Turlock High basketball says goodbye to longtime coach

The Turlock High School boys basketball program will look a bit different next season as its leader, Doug Cornfoot, retires from coaching the varsity team. 

After 15 years and three league championships, Cornfoot decided to hang it up following the COVID-shortened 2020 season, where the Bulldogs finished third in Central California Athletic League play with a 5-4 record. 

After 20 total years of coaching, which included five years at Delhi High School before he came to Turlock, Cornfoot noted that the decades had taken a toll on his body and resulted in many sleepless nights. The absence of summer ball last year helped him realize it was time to step back from the sport, he said.

Bulldogs first in conference play

Ceres High’s boys and girls water polo teams finished atop the Western Athletic Conference South Division standings this season.

“I’m proud of them,” head coach Stephen Dias said. “They played like a machine all season long. It was simply amazing. They were a fun team to coach.”

Ceres High’s girls team claimed the WAC title outright with a 14-9 victory at Los Banos on May 18.

The Bulldogs and Tigers compiled 7-1 and 6-2 records, respectively.

Ceres High (7-1) finished ahead of Los Banos, Johansen (2-5-1) and Pacheco (0-7-1).

“The girls are excited,” Dias said.

CHS girls soccer take second in league

Ceres High’s girls soccer team ended the 2020-21 season on a positive note.

The Bulldogs cruised to a 9-1 win against host Los Banos on May 26.

“I’m proud of everything we accomplished,” said Jackie Ruiz, who contributed at goalkeeper and forward during her final season at Ceres High. “I think we did a pretty good job from where we started. It was basically a brand-new team. We only had five returning starters.”

When it comes to Pitman High School basketball standout Abbie DiGrazia, it’s clear there are several factors responsible for her success in the sport so far: hard work, a positive attitude and an excellent support system behind her. 

It was DiGrazia’s grandfather who first put a basketball in her hands, she said, inspiring her to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunt, who both played college basketball at Chico State, as well as her father, a former collegiate basketball player who also played professionally in the Philippines. The sport is definitely a family affair for DiGrazia, and after her grandpa signed her up for a basketball league in elementary school, the rest was history.

Academica wins first game with goal in final minutes

Semi-professional soccer returned to Turlock last weekend as Academica SC defeated FC Davis by a score of 2-1 in what was the team’s first match in over a year.

Academica’s return to their home field last Saturday night was a fan affair, with about 300 eager fans making their way out to the pitch to watch the team play for the first time since the coronavirus put a premature end to the 2020 season. It was well worth the wait, as Academica secured the exciting victory in the final minutes of the game. 

The team has developed a friendly rivalry with Davis and as the winner of the game, Academica earned the annual contest's Milk Can Trophy, which looks exactly like it sounds.

Turlock man breaks weightlifting world record

Turlock resident Ryan Clay has put in plenty of hard work over the years to go from what he described as a “skinny” kid in his youth to now holding a world record for heaviest deadlift in adulthood. 

As a powerlifter competing in the World Association of Bench Pressers and Dead Lifters, Clay broke the 242-pound class deadlift world record in the men’s RAW division (drug tested with no equipment) after completing a 706-pound lift on May 15. The prior record was held by Cephas McTizic of Arkansas at 705.2 pounds, which was achieved in February 2020.

Recent signing ceremonies showcase Pitman’s athletic success

Students at Pitman High School are no stranger to excelling both academically and athletically, a winning trait of the Pride which resulted in a myriad of athletes committing to play their respective sports at the college level this year — five of whom signed their National Letters of Intent this past week. 

Boys soccer player Xavier Barajas (University of California, Merced) and pole vaulter Jarod Moren (Pacific University) both signed with the respective colleges last week, while basketball standouts Josiah Frank (Willamette University), Gurbir Grewal (Pacific University) and Jessica Smith (Bryn Mawr College) put ink to paper on Monday.
