Modesto ranks 5th least educated among 150 U.S. cities, according to recent study

Despite improvements in its graduation rates, Modesto continues to struggle in education, according to a recent report that ranks it the fifth least educated among “the 150 largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas.”

The report demonstrates that local schools and colleges still have much work to do, said Dr. Chad Redwing, the interim president of Modesto Junior College. “We should not accept to stay at this end of the rankings — we need to encourage more learning in our community.”

Stanislaus State University in Turlock Named No. 5 for “Best Bang for the Buck” in the West and No. 8 on the Master’s List in Washington Monthly’s 2022 Rankings

September 4, 2022 - Stanislaus State continues to provide students and families more “bang for their buck” when it comes to attaining a high-quality and affordable education. 

Washington Monthly released its annual College Guide and Rankings in which it rates schools on what they do for the country, and Stan State earned spots in the Top 10 on two lists.

Local agencies are awash in COVID-19 relief funding. And local school districts struggle with a teacher shortage.

So why is the Stanislaus County Office of Education giving layoff notices to teachers and other employees?

An administrator confirmed SCOE is laying off employees this week, including 18 teachers, two managers and six classified employees.

Turlock mother makes the most of second chance after stroke with career college

In 2019, I was in school working toward my associate degree while also juggling being a single parent to my five children. I was struggling, taking multiple classes at once, all the while taking care of kids. Then I had a stroke — at school.

I tried to go back but was having a hard time handling the workload. It quickly became clear that the recovery process from my stroke, coupled with my situation at home, meant a traditional higher education environment was out of the question for me.

I hated to have to give up — for myself and for my kids, who I knew were rooting for me. I decided I wasn’t going to let those challenges prevent me from getting an education. So when friends and family recommended Milan Institute, a private career education college, I decided to enroll.

FRESNO STATE MAKES TOP 20 FOR ONLINE MBA PROGRAM

Fresno State has received recognition for its online MBA program, being named among the best in the state.

According to mbacentral.org, Fresno State’s program was listed in 12th place in its list of California’s best 20 MBAs. Rankings for the list were made based on tuition, accreditation, support services and quality of classes.
