Canceled since COVID, popular music fest returns to Modesto; more events planned for May

Festivals and events will spring up across the Modesto area in May.

Among them will be the return of the popular Modesto Porchfest, which has not been held since the pandemic hit.

During Porchfest, local bands perform outside at host neighborhood homes while people gather to listen, many roaming on foot or by bike.

And just before May begins, there’s another festival set for taco lovers.

Here’s a look at just some of the larger events happening in the Modesto and Mother Lode regions.

CA to stop requiring vaccine proof, negative tests at concerts, other large indoor events

in Around California

California will lift COVID-19 vaccine and negative test requirements for large indoor events like concerts and games starting April 1, state officials announced last week.

Verification of full vaccination against COVID-19 and pre-entry negative test results will be strongly recommended by the state — but no longer required — at indoor “mega” events with more than 1,000 attendees.

Masks are strongly recommended at mega events, but are also not mandated by the state.

The state is shedding the vaccine verification requirement as California emerges from an omicron-fueled surge that sent numbers skyrocketing during the winter.

Downtown Turlock prepares for holiday events

The streets of downtown Turlock will soon be busy with holiday fun as business owners and the community prepare for tricks, treats and plenty of Christmas cheer thanks to the return of several beloved events. 

A sense of normalcy will return to Main Street in the coming weeks as the Christmas Parade and Festival of Lights make triumphant returns after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic. This year, however, both celebrations will look a bit different than community members are used to.

Postponed or canceled? Central Valley, Mother Lode events halted by coronavirus

If this were a normal spring, April and May would bring some of the bigger festivals and events of the year, with people gathering across communities to celebrate.

But, of course, nothing is normal as we remain in our homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hence, the organizers of major events in the Modesto and Mother Lode regions have had decisions to make. Some have canceled their celebrations completely, others have rescheduled with hopes they can be held later in the year.

Even beyond May, the North Modesto Kiwanis Club already made the decision to cancel its June American Graffiti Festival & Car Show for the year.

Here’s a look at decisions to cancel or postpone some of the larger events usually held in April and May:

Postponed celebrations

ART OF DESIGN HOME TOUR: The planned May fundraiser for the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock will be rescheduled. The new date has yet to be determined, according to an email from the arts center.

Fall arrives, and with it popular celebrations and festivals in Modesto, Mother Lode

Fall has arrived and with it a host of festivals and fairs marking the season.

October is loaded with options to get out and enjoy community celebrations and cultural events. Here’s a look at some of the bigger events coming up:

TASTES OF THE VALLEY — Oct. 3: Stanislaus State Agriculture Department and Friends of the Fair Foundation present the annual event. Samples from wineries and brewers from around the region, local cheesemakers and restaurants with small plates. 6-9 p.m. Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. 900 N. MODESTO OKTOBERFEST – Oct. 4: Held each year by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, this celebration will feature live music and midway games along with plenty of brats, sauerkraut, German potato salad and, of course, beers all around. Plenty of microbrews will be available for sampling, as will California wines and some nonalcoholic drinks. 5:30-10 p.m. Modesto Centre Plaza parking lot, 1000 L St. $35 advance, $40 at the door; age 21-and-older event. modchamberca.chambermaster.com
