Turlock Unified won’t ask California public health for local control over masks in schools

The trustees of Turlock Unified School District won’t send a letter they had drafted to state officials asking to lift statewide COVID-19 mandates for K-12 schools.

The letter did not receive enough support from the board to bring it to a vote, though it was the only item on the agenda for the special meeting held Monday evening.

The letter draft, addressed to Gov. Gavin Newsom and top California Department of Public Health officials, asked for the ability to work with Stanislaus County public health officials to devise safety measures that reflect local COVID-19 data.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Californians should wear masks and skip Fourth of July family gatherings, Gov. Gavin Newsom pleaded as the state’s coronavirus tally surged. But the governor stopped short of threatening a crackdown on those who violate state public health orders.

Newsom on Thursday urged people to turn to their “better angels” and use common sense but said, “It’s more education. I’m not coming out with a fist.”

His request came a day after over 4,000 more cases of COVID-19 were reported in California.

While some areas of the state have shown relatively few cases, some of the most densely populated are struggling with rapid rises in infections and hospitalizations. The rates of hospitalizations and positivity — the proportion of those tested who were found to have the virus — have soared over the past two weeks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — With new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on wearing face masks, several cities in California are changing their protocol for essential businesses.

Some cities have even required anyone who leaves their home to wear a face-covering or risk a fine.

At the same time, other counties like San Diego have taken a more hands-off approach by allowing businesses to decide whether to deny entry to people who are not wearing face coverings.

On top of concern over reusable bags and transmission of COVID-19, businesses themselves have started to require face coverings for shoppers as well.

This is in addition to previous regulation on workers wearing face masks. Now, businesses may start to turn away those who do not have a face covering.

Nugget Markets, operating within the greater Sacramento metropolitan area and headquartered in Woodland, has begun to do just that. All stores will now require customers to wear a face mask or covering in order to shop.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Just days after recommending that people wear masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Riverside County went a step further and ordered all residents to cover their faces when leaving home, as the number of infections and deaths continued to rise across California.

Dr. Cameron Kaiser, the top health officer in the state’s fourth-most populous county, said “not everybody's getting the message” about social distancing while in public, so officials were forced to "change from saying that you should to saying that you must.”

The order issued Saturday also prohibits all gatherings except for family members living in the same home, according to a county statement. Police would enforce the regulations “as they deem necessary,” the statement said.

Health officials: Face coverings could help slow spread of virus

As the national discussion continues on whether or not people should wear face masks when leaving the home, California health officials have said there would be a benefit to helping stop the spread of COVID-19, but stressed that people should not be using the N95 and surgical masks healthcare workers need and which are already in short supply.

“Face coverings are not a substitute for physical distancing or frequent hand washing, which we know are amongst the most effective ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Dr. Sonia Angell, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Health Officer. “Wearing a cloth face covering could provide some additional benefit by acting as a reminder for other people to keep their distance, and it could help reduce the spread of infectious particles from those who could be infected but don’t have symptoms.”

“Face coverings could provide some additional protection against COVID-19, but Californians should not have a false sense of security if they choose to wear them. Make sure you’re also staying 6 feet away from other people if you have to leave your home to get groceries or prescriptions,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.
