Returning students focus of Health Center Week

The main campus of Golden Valley Health Centers in south Merced was filled with the sound of music and children’s laughter on Monday as families came out to enjoy an afternoon of activities and complimentary medical services.

The event was organized to kick off National Health Center Week, which highlights the role these centers play in community health and prevention efforts around the country.

In the last five years or so, it looked like Stanislaus County would be moving its Health Services Agency away from its longtime home at 830 Scenic Drive.

But county leaders have concluded the best place for building a 55,000-square-foot health services administrative center is the old county hospital site on Scenic Drive.

Early this week, the county Board of Supervisors approved moving forward with demolition of dilapidated buildings at the Scenic campus — a job that could cost $10.3 million by itself.

The county plan calls for constructing the new building on Scenic for health services administration, support staff and public health programs.

The estimated project cost is between $56.9 million and $69.3 million when the demolition costs are included.

The truckers and warehouse workers at Dot Foods can now get basic health care right at the south Modesto business.

So can their spouses and children, under a concept that Dot is spreading across its 12 distribution centers in the United States, at minimal cost to families.

The company expects that about 400 local employees and dependents will use the Dot Foods Family Health Center. It opened in a 1,440-square-foot modular building in late March and had a belated ribbon-cutting Wednesday.

“If you’re feeling under the weather, coming here is what we want you to do,” said Matt Holt, vice president of human resources for Dot.
