Stanislaus mosquito fair will offer family activities, information on preventing disease

Mosquitoes will be the main attraction at a family-friendly event in Turlock.

The Turlock Mosquito Abatement District plans an open house March 23 with activities and information on the pesky insects and how to protect the public against mosquito-borne diseases. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Four locals contract West Nile Virus

Four Stanislaus County residents have all been confirmed to have contracted West Nile Virus (WNV) and all four have developed the fairly uncommon neurological illness, known as neuroinvasive WNV, the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency reported on August 22.

The four cases are the first human cases of the virus in the county for the year.

As of August 18, California had 31 counties with WNV activity. There were 26 cases, which does not include the four cases recently confirmed in Stanislaus County. Two cases in California have been fatal.

West Nile detected in Turlock mosquito sample

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency has confirmed that two mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus — one from the Turlock area and one from the east side of the county.

Three human cases of the virus have been identified in Stanislaus County. As of July 29, WNV has been detected in 23 California counties with the WNV activity confirmed in seven humans, 49 dead birds and 702 mosquito samples.

Human infection of mosquito-borne illness found in Stanislaus County

A Stanislaus County woman has become the first person this year in the county to be diagnosed with St. Louis encephalitis virus, according to the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency.

The woman's name and hometown were not released. She is in her 50s. She had neurologic symptoms and was tested in September; confirmatory testing was performed by the California Department of Public Health and recently released by the SCHSA.

Mosquito activity on the rise this summer

As the temperature climbs and mosquito activity increases, local health departments are reminding residents to take precautions against catching West Nile virus, as the California Department of Public Health reported the first death from West Nile Virus for the season.

The death was reported in San Luis Obispo County. 

“West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing, so I urge Californians to take every possible precaution to protect against mosquito bites,” said Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer.

As of July 9, WNV has been detected in 45 dead birds from 6 counties and 177 mosquito samples from 13 counties. Hot temperatures this month are contributing to increasing numbers of mosquitoes and the increased risk of virus transmission to humans. So far this season, activity is within expected levels. The risk of disease due to WNV usually increases at this time of year and is highest throughout the summer and early fall.
