Body found on canal bank in south Modesto. Stanislaus sheriff’s detectives investigating

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a suspicious death in south Modesto.

At about 6:45 a.m., a person walking her dog reported that she found what appeared to be a dead person, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz said.

2,500 pounds of pot seized by sheriff’s deputies serving warrant near school in Modesto

A search warrant served at an illegal pot grow in Modesto on Friday morning found about 900 plants plus processed marijuana, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The search was conducted about 7 a.m. at a residence on the 900 block of Lenore Court, just east of Mark Twain Jr. High School in west Modesto. Thirteen people initially were taken into custody and four firearms were seized, Sgt. Luke Schwartz told The Bee.

Police in the Central Valley are searching for a big-rig driver who fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian, investigators said.

In the early hours of October 19, 2023, a quiet night on the streets of Ceres was disrupted by a harrowing incident, as the Ceres Police Department responded to a distressing call of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision.

Weekly Safety Report: Drug Delivery and Knife Brandishing Incidents in Turlock, California

Two incidents occurred in Turlock, California this week. In the first incident, a man was arrested after attempting to deliver drugs to a hotel guest. Three firearms were also seized. In the second incident, a parolee brandished a knife at family members, fled from officers, and grabbed an officer's TASER.

Family: Missing Napa Valley College student is safe, calls from Chile

A Napa Valley College student who had not been heard from in over a month is safe, family members said Sunday.

Paulina Casas, the mother of 28-year-old Santos Angel Lopez, said Sunday evening that her son called her from Chile, their first contact in 36 days. It was not immediately clear when or how Lopez traveled to South America.

Morse West, also known as Holly, was shot near Martin and Clayton avenues. He was from Modesto.

Police seize black-market marijuana, illegal flavored tobacco

A report about marijuana being sold illegally at a smoke shop on Lander Avenue turned into a multi-agency compliance check of smoke shops across Turlock on Tuesday.

A total of 10 businesses were visited, resulting in seven seizures, six citations issued (four civil and two criminal). Black-market marijuana, flavored inhalants, and flavored tobacco products were also seized as a result of the search warrant at the Lander Avenue business.

Stanislaus County Sheriff Asks for Public’s Help in Locating Missing 16-Year-Old Monica Ascensio, Last Seen in Turlock

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office officials report that they are asking for help locating missing 16-year-old Monica Ascensio. Monica left her Turlock home Sunday morning between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Investigators believe she may be with 26-year-old Cristian Ceja, who has multiple warrants for his arrest. They may be traveling in a gray colored Honda Element with California license plate 6MKL047.

CHP: The ‘largest’ drug bust in Merced Co. history

A traffic stop by a California Highway Patrol K-9 officer on Friday led to the largest drug bust in Merced County history, ultimately seizing $10.5 million worth of narcotics, according to authorities.

CHP says around 1:00 p.m. a K-9 officer conducted a stop for a traffic violation northbound on Interstate 5 at the Santa Nella Scales.

Modesto cracks down on vehicle sideshows. Drivers and spectators can face these fines

New fines for people involved in vehicle sideshows won approval from the Modesto City Council.

It voted 7-0 on Tuesday, July 11, to fine drivers and passengers up to $3,500 for taking part in these displays of speed and stunts. People who organize or promote sideshows could pay as much as $3,000. Those who just watch could be fined up to $2,500.
